so all staff have the same problem working with you. what's the common denominator here?
I have some new staff that are awesome and some that are not. Same as always
Coach
What I’ve noticed in the last 15 years is that staff care A LOT less. Like anything I assign or explain is inconveniencing them and they are constantly one step away from quitting from the minute they walk in the door the first day. It’s hard to even want to coach them because they all seem so disinterested. There’s maybe one out of ten with a solid work ethic. The rest are sort of bleh. It’s a whole cultural shift. I don’t think it’s just in accounting. Even trying to find a nanny, majority of young people just don’t care and expect a whole lot for not that much work. We ended up with an amazing nanny and what made her amazing was that she showed up when she said she was going to. She didn’t no show, no call. She didn’t text me when she was supposed to be there to say there’s traffic but show up with a fresh Starbucks, and she didn’t demand I pay her in advance for a week’s work and then leave early every day (true story). She came on time when she said she would and gave us notice when she wanted off. The bar is that low now.
Agree with this. Huge shift in mindset. I think the shift is went from what is best for the team and firm to what is best for them (we can argue all day if this is good or bad). But overall it makes it harder to get anything done because no one is putting in the same time/effort. Also, agree with the feeling like any time I talk to a staff or senior now a days to give them something to do, try and teach/coach they act like I am inconveniencing them to do their job. Even when it’s just doing something with in normal 9-5 hours.
It’s u dude. It’s you.
Try confirming they understand what you have explained and have them take notes. Speaking at people doesn’t automatically mean they’re going to remember what you said. Also try using self-review checklists and make sure you are giving review comments and explaining the why, rather than just telling them to change X or fixing it yourself. It takes time to train new people, but people tend to like working for those who invest in them and building a team does eventually pay off. Keep in mind though that you will lose several along the way. All part of working in public accounting.
perhaps you’re good at your job but don’t know how to coach? you have to put yourself in their shoes as this is all new to them. they probably don’t even know how to to use basic excel functions
Think hard about it, look in the mirror, there's the problem.
There is a significant drop in performance with those who did school during covid
If it’s busy season, as a newer staff, I find it’s difficult to retain information. There’s little time to learn. People expect fast turnaround. It can be tough applying concepts from one return to the next, because there’s little time to actually understand the principle.
Im a new staff and I’m killing it
Hmm they seem pretty much the same as always. Some are gd, some are bad
I think you have to remind yourself that repetition is key for memory. Your saying all new staff are bad tells me you may be a bit impatient when someone doesn't get it the first time. It's easy to forget how long it took us to retain and be good at our jobs and try to hold new staff to an impossible standard. I'd say talk to the newer staff and ask what they're having a hard time with and how you can help - in a friendly way of course - instead of saying they're all bad. Communication is key and if that's the position you take, they may be too intimidated as new staff to ask questions because they may feel judged.
Stop using “like” in your sentences. Maybe it’s you.
Are you talking about me? I’m a new staff in public. I also got my degree from a “degree mill”
