McKinsey doesn’t let partners kids work there.

Yes. Straight up ban. I had a parent that worked at McK. I do not.

Not at all. We are hiring in large numbers and meeting diversity goals. Yes, we may hire relatives, but they still must meet the requirements for the role.

I’m at a B4 firm and feel we actually do a good job of not letting it creep into hiring decisions (at least campus recruiting). It definitely gets you an interview, but that’s it. If every partner got all their kids and clients kids a job, there would be no room for anyone else!

We don’t ban hiring relatives of partners or clients, but I think we’re pretty good about avoiding undue preference for them. If they meet the hiring bar, there’s a chance they get a little attention from the sell team, is about all I’ve seen. The last couple I can remember happened to be “diverse” candidates anyway so not a drag from that perspective, though I also think the numbers have never been enough to move the needle on that.

Yes, definitely. Nepotism is pretty much the way the US works.

We have set targets and recruiting has been pretty good at pushing back, and I suspect will be even more so this year. The numbers I have seen in the past are concerning - 80%+ of partner referrals are non-d&i candidates, which is substantially higher than our campus recruiting average, but they represent a single digit % of overall recruiting so the overall impact is not as extensive as I would have thought. That said as with everything else, it’s not as easy as yes and no. Some of these referrals are client kids. The 20% is obviously D&I. So we have to be able to flex somehow. I do like the MCK policy - your kids can’t work there; I think that’s a good standard. We had one of our top leaders highlight their kid got an internship a couple of years ago, and it was just so inappropriate. I think all of rolled our eyes at “got.”

I’m a mid-level working in a niche area in NYC. I like the work I do, put in long hours, high quality work, take time to mentor juniors, etc. I see myself at a law firm long term but now wondering if this is the right firm to make partner. Among others, one big concern I have is the non-existent emphasis on diversity and inclusion initiatives (they aren’t even pretending to care...), no committees, no statements in support of POC, etc. How do I find firms really committed to these issues?

It seems like every firm advertises that they support diversity and inclusion. What does your firm actually do in terms of mentorship or other programs for diverse attorneys and do you find it actually beneficial? My firm reached out about a mentorship program where they were supposed to pair us with a partner mentor who is also person of color, but I still haven't heard back.

How would you rate your firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts? Do you feel there is a strong emphasis on promoting POC?

What qualities do you look for in a mentor, or if you already have a successful mentor/mentee relationship what makes them a good mentor for yourself? That is, if you had the option of choosing one. Same gender, ethnic bg, professional bg?

Hi guys - need some advice. I received a really good offer from FIS for a senior consulting position. I gave my notice with my current company (a boutique firm in real estate tech) and they asked me to reconsider for several reasons. Taking the new role, I would be learning a completely new software and in a new industry (treasury). Am I making a bad move?
