Are principals allowed to make you take down a DonorsChoose? I asked the district for some iPads for my science lab since the kids aren’t allowed to do experiments this year and the school said no so I made a DC and my principal just told me to take it down. Can they do that?

Donors choose for computers if any sort need to be approved by our BOE also. Since they are maintained by the district, even donated computers cost money. They have to load software and be able to track student searches and activity. My district has said that a donated chrome book can cost $100-200 to get it ready for student use.

I have used Donors Choose, but I always get permission from my principal. Some districts will not allow you to use Donors Choose. You could ask if you could look for a grant. WalMart and local banks will help also.

Anything we do through a donor situation such as Donors Choose, we have to have approved by our county BOE

likesmarthelpful

Disappointing to hear since when writing a project, we have to be quite mindful of people who are reading of our proposal.

I used to work in a district where we had 30 students but only 15 chrome books so I used Donors Choose to get some tablets. When I left that district, I got a letter from DC saying my old principal was requesting the tablets back and that technically according to DC rules, tech belongs to the district. It really sucks when you have family and friends donate for you but your district can just say it belongs to them. In my current district, if you enter a contest like Scholastic’s book contests, you have to have board approval before you can even accept your prize! This is why I stick to doing Amazon wishlists for myself because I can have the items sent to my house and claim them as mine and have them just be things I use in my classroom.

Who will maintain the devices? Take liability for any issues regarding the devices? If the answer is the district, then they should have a say.

In my district we are not allowed to use Donors Choose 🤷🏻‍♀️

like

Why?!

like

Perhaps they are concerned about equity issues.

like

My hope is that it's an issue with having unmonitored technology, not equity. When "lowest common denominator" is rationalized by equity, it makes me ill.

What principal wouldn’t accept such a gift especially when there are limited resources?

like

Yes. Many districts have policies about using donorschoose or other sites like it. Usually it’s districts that don’t want to “look bad”

like

If that's the reason, what a crying shame! Shame on all of them! Us teachers who are working hard & long hours "in the trenches" are forced to assist students' materials & PD (professional development) financially out of their own pockets ... BAD KARMA!

I don’t know if so that sucks! Especially if your school won’t provide them for you!

like

We have to get it approved by the BOE.

like

The name alone implies NO. Don’t take it down until you talk to your union

like

Is it any of their business where you get supplies that you provide? Can they tell you not to get post it notes from the dollar store? Weird.

funny

This is so sad... Our salaries do not reflect our importance, educational background, the unlimited hours we do to plan & prepare, and purchasing our classroom out of our own pockets... What employer does that? Donorschoose shows and provides great empathy and assistance toward our students educational needs. Teachers should be focused on teaching. It's horrible that we have to go the extra mile to buy materials to help educate our 21st Century future community.

like

Our school district doesn’t allow us to do them. 🙁

like

Yes. My district does not allow us to use it at all.

like

Depends if there is a policy against it. It gets tricky with technology though even if there is no policy against DC.

like

Some districts have policies against it and in the district I used to work in down south .... you had to have approval and all funds went to the district to approve your purchases which in my opinion was just a way to micromanage people.

like

We have to have ours approved by our admin. You might want to ask your education association.

like

DonorsChoose all funds go through the district and anything bought with the DC money stays in the district but there is another site I think Teachers Choice that might not be right but Real Rap with Reynolds ( a great teacher youtuber ) talked about it and anything donated through that is donated to the teacher so they can take it with them wherever they go.

Hi!

I graduated w/ my BS in Marketing in May (2.5 yrs, 3.72 gpa) and I have 1 year of professional marketing experience as a paid media strategist at a 50+ employee agency. I manage big budgets + multiple accounts on Google/YT/FB.

Dilemma:

I’m making $16/hr and I’ve brought up increasing my pay 3 times + the answer has been along the lines of “We’re increasing everyone company wide in the coming weeks, so you’ll get it once we get everyone up!” which was over a month ago.

Any advice? Thanks!
