Are sick days a thing anymore, or is it just working from home to not fall behind when you can't physically go to work? Asking from my bed.

Yeah, I finally had an epiphany about this when I was working from home while quite sick, leading a brainstorm while laying down, w a fever. And the account person on the line was being fucking brutal, challenging everything, asking complicated questions and demanding instant answers. I finally realized: dude u r too sick to deal w this bullshit. So I cut the brainstorm short, hung up and went to fcking sleep. Miracle of miracles, when I got back to work, the sky hadn’t fallen, the project was still there, and everything pretty much worked out. Two morals: 1. some days u really r just too sick to work. That’s why they call them “sick days.” 2. The work will b there waiting for u when u get back. Nothing is as urgent as it seems.

Agencies use WFH days to keep us slaving over work when we’re sick. So I use WFH days to stay in bed without having to burn a real PTO day. But for real, if you’re sick and they’re bugging you - gotta put your foot down.

like

Depends on how time off works at your shop but I want to be clear that taking a sick day is not WFH. You can be sick and WFH because you don’t want to take a sick day. But do not be fooled into using up a designated sick day when you actually worked.

I used to work for a crappy agency that had PTO days. I thought that meant vacation days but found they were to be used for vacation, sickness, jury duty, berevement, etc. Therefore, everyone came to work sick so they wouldn't have to take a valuable PTO day. BTW - we worked in one of those soul crushing "open floor plans" so cooties flew everywhere and the whole place was always I'll with something.

Companies legally have to give you sick days. Stand up for yourself and take them. Sleep and recover.

Yes!

Take the day off and rest. I promise that the work can either wait or your co-workers can find a way to get it done without you.

I work at home if I have any hint of a sickness, in respect for my other coworkers to not spread it around. If only everyone else did that, I wouldn’t be sick in the first place. If I’m really down for the count, which is rare, I’ll take an actual sick day.

I don’t know, let me know what you find out. I haven’t taken a day off yet but I can FEEL myself getting sicker by the hour.

A few weeks ago I got back from vacation and got violently ill with a stomach bug. I was up the entire night vomiting my brains out and honestly it was a mess. Next day, I was running on maybe 3 hours of sleep, so I called it a sick day. I normally would WFH if I wasn’t feeling well but legitimately I was so wiped out I was falling asleep every 30 mins. Sometimes you have no choice and you let your agency know the deal and that is that.

Good conversation, although I guess I originally meant "does anyone actually take a sick day anymore?" I'm sick but working from home because of the fear of falling behind on things, and out of consideration for not becoming patient zero at the office. We're a PTO shop so I'll work from my deathbed so I don't lose a day for vacation.

I differentiate between sick not working and sick wfh. Earlier this year I had the flu, and for four days, I wasn’t able to get out of bed or form coherent thoughts. So it was 4 days of I’m not working at all/no email besides the one saying I’m not coming in. On the fifth day, I stayed home but was well enough to call into meetings between naps. That was a wfh day. What I’m saying is if you’re sick and need to just take care of yourself, then do it. Just let work know if you are/are not working from home and stick to that.

So I met a guy through FB and went on a date with him. The date went well and at the end he said lets meet up again - didn’t get to it since he fell sick for a few weeks. Been talking for about 2 months but his responses oscillate from daily to weekly to irregular. We’ll stop texting for a bit then he’ll message back and we start again. But he hasn’t responded for a few days after messaging first, thinking he’s keeping me on the hook, but I don’t want to assume things. Any comments/advice?

Will my profile be hampered when working with startup?

Went out this weekend for my cousin’s 21st bday. My cousin ended up getting super sick, throwing up at the bar, etc. my buddy and his gf came to the same bar (they were celebrating gf’s bday). Seeing my cousin in a bad state I decided to take her home. My buddy’s gf got super mad at me and my gf for wanting to care for my cousin. She then gave a half assed apology saying she was annoyed at the situation. I don’t really know how to bring this up to my friend. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?

I’m mentally breaking down because I have been doing a job of a scheduler, PM, notetaker, regulatory submissions, and thus have no room for growth to work on strategy. I’m an AS and I am so sick of having to remind everyone because no one looks at my notes, recaps, and no one remembers anything from any meeting. Recently because I’m so exhausted I started making more “mistakes” like not catching a mistake on a submission. Is this because I suck or is it time for me to move off? I feel terrible.

Hi! I have two offers and I’m not sure what to do. One is with a small firm that serves as outside counsel to medical practices (leasing, employment issues and acquisitions are primary work load) and the other is in-house for a pharmaceutical company (managing outside counsel, vendor contracts, privacy). The firm pays much better (1800 hours, flexible wfh) but I feel like the experience in house would go further in becoming a GC down the road. Please help!
