I’m a millennial, and I’m still not a fan of visible tattoos and facial piercings in the workplace, unless it’s based in ancient cultural practices. I do have quite a few non-traditional ear piercings with fine jewelry, but that’s about as edgy as it gets for me. I think the issue is we have all been socialized to associate tattoos with lower class people, unemployment, etc (i.e. growing up, most of us were told tattoos were “bad”). So, unfortunately, even though I have a couple small tattoos (under my bra line and on my mid back), if I saw someone in the office with a huge tattoo and I wasn’t familiar with their work, I would probably make a knee jerk snap judgement. I think a lot of people are likely in this boat - like, tattoos and piercings look cool, but I still don’t associate it with favorable things in the office, even if it all of a sudden became acceptable or was allowed in policy. Perhaps things will change with this next generation though!

Facial tattoos are deeply rooted traditions in some cultures, and acceptable and have nothing to do with gangs or murders BA1, my grandma had facial tattoos, believe me she was no murderer but in her culture girls got facial tattoos and it was normal. It’s all about context.

Just going to drop this here: - No business degree - Went from Intern->Consultant->Senior Consultant->Starting new job as Manager. All in exactly 5 years. - I have EIGHT tattoos, getting more. Coworkers have seen several on my arms and a large one on my leg. I’m known as the “alternative, quirky, fun” coworker that also kicks ass at my job. Be yourself, get all the tattoos you want, of course be professional (you can still show tats as a professional), and above all else - work hard, do stellar work, and be confident in who you are. That is what matters. Individuality helps people remember you. Stop trying to be clones of each other. And stop worrying about the opinions of people on the internet finding ways to rationalize discrimination sulking behind a sad keyboard.

I have two full sleeves and my chest done. That being said I only wear long sleeve shirts. Not because my tattoos are vulgar (which they are not), I do it because I don’t want people like @Deloitte5 over here, labeling me as trashy when they don’t even know me. I don’t let the ink fly anywhere around here because opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

ZS1 Neanderthals actually had tattoos. At lease they have been found on “the ice man” With that I have a full keg piece to half sleeve plus a few other. 20 years of military service/ culture. Deloitte didn’t care about them when I was there and I did both federal and commercial projects. It’s just not that big of a deal anymore to the mass majority of employers. The days of running around in cuff links have passed except for a few boutique firms who still travel Sunday through Friday. Companies just don’t care really. I’m tact I’ve met more executives who have tattoos than I can count at this point. With that in mind I do wear long sleeve on projects as I always have but typically roll sleeves up so they are noticeable. No one has ever said a word about them

Hot Take: Clients shouldn't get a say on what consulting resources look like. We wouldn't tolerate it on any other basis. Absent very specific provisions for high security projects with regulatory/statutory requirements, they don't get play into our people's personal lives, and it's long past time that some of these ancient fossils start being reminded of that.

During the pandemic, I noticed a lot of employees have been more comfortable showing off their tattoos and piercings. I’ve actually received many compliments on mine. But if I were to travel again to client site, I would still wear a long sleeve as I don’t want to deal with “what do yourself tattoos mean?” Because I truly don’t know.

My gov client has two full sleeves and she’s a woman. I have one on my forearm and am planning on getting another one. If anyone has a problem with them, fire me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Seriously, google tattoo statistics. Over 1/3 of the US population has a tattoo. Something like 40% of 18-34 year olds have them. The industry itself is booming. If, in 2021, someone has an issue with tattoos, I see it as a “them” problem they need to deal with personally.

1.) Tattoos are apolitical as far as left vs. Right however I do think the GOP has recently been taken over by its "tattoo wing" 2.) I need to start a tattoo removal business down the line because it will be a solid asset in 10-15 years.

Yes it’s frowned upon but it shouldn’t be. Everyone who thinks it’s “trashy” probably do something more “immodest” (I.e cheat on their wives, drink coors light)

I’m a Manager at Deloitte. I have many ear piercings, tattoos, my hair is purple, and have had conservative clients. Also considered a septum piercing for a time but didn’t get one because my partner isn’t a fan. In my experience if you’re good at what you do, people don’t care what you look like and will go to bat for you and support you with the client.

You shouldn’t work somewhere that you don’t feel empowered to show up to work as your authentic self. I’m on camera in my teal gaming chair and gaming headset with rainbow lights every day because those are the things that bring me joy and make working with difficult clients bearable.

I’m 30 and don’t care AT ALL. My clients are old and do care. Hopefully Millennials taking more executive roles over the next 20 years will change this culture. Until then, no face piercings, and tattoos should be covered.

I have a lot of tattoos and used to have pink hair, but as a woman in tech, if you wanna pass up my in-demand senior data dev skills because of some petty problem you have with my arm, I’ll get another job within an hour. Soooo enjoy looking for some vanilla juniors, I’ll be busy over here counting my cash from some other company not thinking about ya 💜

I have a full japanese style sleeve, on every project I've been on I've waited a few months and once I have a good relationship with people I'll usually roll up my sleeves and test the waters. Every single time my tattoo has been complimented and led to the other folks around showing me their tattoos or telling me about a family member of theirs that have or would love to have a tattoo similar to mine.

like

@KPMG8 Unfortunately yes, in Japan, tattoos are still frowned upon and associated with crime. This is because in the late 1860s / early 70s, although there was already a rich tattoo culture, the emperor decided that a society with tattoos would present a less professional face to visiting westerners. This led him to ban tattoos outright. Because they were now banned, the people most likely to get tattoos were rebels and criminals/Yakuza who did not care to follow the law. Sadly, even though the ban was lifted in 1948, the stigma was there to stay. Today there are still many places (restaurants etc.) you can not have tattoos visible if you want service. Part of this is because the Yakuza is still very much thriving and it is easier to say no tattoos than it is to say no Yakuza.

Nose rings should not be a problem.

Nose rings are pretty common at workplace now a days. I did several projects in Oakland and people look at me weirdly because I don’t have any piercings or tattoos 😅

D6 - exactly. People need to stop living in the 50s. Why care or judge a person’s tattoo, piercings etc. as long as they are doing their job?

My paychecks have been smaller due to paying back the advance and prioritizing maxing out my 401k and HSA (my credit card debt was interest free). It was depressing working these hours to mostly just pay needs and my debt. Today I paid it all off! Woooooo! I feel so free.

Figured I'll ask if anything's changed, if it's even worth ... considering.
