I’m a millennial, and I’m still not a fan of visible tattoos and facial piercings in the workplace, unless it’s based in ancient cultural practices. I do have quite a few non-traditional ear piercings with fine jewelry, but that’s about as edgy as it gets for me.

I think the issue is we have all been socialized to associate tattoos with lower class people, unemployment, etc (i.e. growing up, most of us were told tattoos were “bad”). So, unfortunately, even though I have a couple small tattoos (under my bra line and on my mid back), if I saw someone in the office with a huge tattoo and I wasn’t familiar with their work, I would probably make a knee jerk snap judgement. I think a lot of people are likely in this boat - like, tattoos and piercings look cool, but I still don’t associate it with favorable things in the office, even if it all of a sudden became acceptable or was allowed in policy. Perhaps things will change with this next generation though!

SM1 can admit what we all know. Good on him for making the recognition. For everyone if you who says “ok boomer” you are doing the same thing, except with ignorance.
Fact is his piercings are viewed to society the same as my ink (sleeve and full leg plus some more). Guess what, it wasn’t a “snap judgement” by any standards. I’m the norm with this regard. Fact is cultures have changed and and the data points presented only further prove it. If senior execs or whoever for that matter have an issue with ink or piercings that’s completely on them. None of us will change it and there’s no reason to even try to have conflict over it. I could care less if my clients have ink showing it doesn’t mean I have to show any of mine. If they ask I will talk about them and that’s where it ends. I have the commons sense to know better.
If my team has ink and shows it I could care less as long as it’s not an issue on the client site. It’s rarely ever happened and isn’t a big deal. You all just need to get off your soap boxes and stop caring about what everyone thinks and just do you

Just going to drop this here:

- No business degree
- Went from Intern->Consultant->Senior Consultant->Starting new job as Manager. All in exactly 5 years.
- I have EIGHT tattoos, getting more. Coworkers have seen several on my arms and a large one on my leg.

I’m known as the “alternative, quirky, fun” coworker that also kicks ass at my job. Be yourself, get all the tattoos you want, of course be professional (you can still show tats as a professional), and above all else - work hard, do stellar work, and be confident in who you are. That is what matters. Individuality helps people remember you. Stop trying to be clones of each other. And stop worrying about the opinions of people on the internet finding ways to rationalize discrimination sulking behind a sad keyboard.

Amazing work. What did you get your degree in?

I have two full sleeves and my chest done. That being said I only wear long sleeve shirts. Not because my tattoos are vulgar (which they are not), I do it because I don’t want people like @Deloitte5 over here, labeling me as trashy when they don’t even know me.

I don’t let the ink fly anywhere around here because opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

Exactly I have some ink but nobodywould ever know until after I've infiltrated their originzation and planted flyers for the local tattoo shop in all the common areas

Hot Take: Clients shouldn't get a say on what consulting resources look like. We wouldn't tolerate it on any other basis. Absent very specific provisions for high security projects with regulatory/statutory requirements, they don't get play into our people's personal lives, and it's long past time that some of these ancient fossils start being reminded of that.

Tattoos and piercings can be considered off culture and people will have impact based on decisions you make. If you pick some thing like this that might be ok w 40% of population other 60% might not like. If client has a policy that those are not allowed hard luck working for them also there will be biases that play out. I took away my ear piercing after bumping into multiple issues and how people started judging me even though it was just one string nothing fancy.

During the pandemic, I noticed a lot of employees have been more comfortable showing off their tattoos and piercings. I’ve actually received many compliments on mine. But if I were to travel again to client site, I would still wear a long sleeve as I don’t want to deal with “what do yourself tattoos mean?” Because I truly don’t know.

My gov client has two full sleeves and she’s a woman. I have one on my forearm and am planning on getting another one. If anyone has a problem with them, fire me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Seriously, google tattoo statistics. Over 1/3 of the US population has a tattoo. Something like 40% of 18-34 year olds have them. The industry itself is booming.

If, in 2021, someone has an issue with tattoos, I see it as a “them” problem they need to deal with personally.

1.) Tattoos are apolitical as far as left vs. Right however I do think the GOP has recently been taken over by its "tattoo wing"
2.) I need to start a tattoo removal business down the line because it will be a solid asset in 10-15 years.

Yes it’s frowned upon but it shouldn’t be.

Everyone who thinks it’s “trashy” probably do something more “immodest” (I.e cheat on their wives, drink coors light)

I’m 30 and don’t care AT ALL. My clients are old and do care. Hopefully Millennials taking more executive roles over the next 20 years will change this culture. Until then, no face piercings, and tattoos should be covered.

I’m a Manager at Deloitte. I have many ear piercings, tattoos, my hair is purple, and have had conservative clients. Also considered a septum piercing for a time but didn’t get one because my partner isn’t a fan. In my experience if you’re good at what you do, people don’t care what you look like and will go to bat for you and support you with the client.

You shouldn’t work somewhere that you don’t feel empowered to show up to work as your authentic self. I’m on camera in my teal gaming chair and gaming headset with rainbow lights every day because those are the things that bring me joy and make working with difficult clients bearable.

I have a full japanese style sleeve, on every project I've been on I've waited a few months and once I have a good relationship with people I'll usually roll up my sleeves and test the waters. Every single time my tattoo has been complimented and led to the other folks around showing me their tattoos or telling me about a family member of theirs that have or would love to have a tattoo similar to mine.

I have a lot of tattoos and used to have pink hair, but as a woman in tech, if you wanna pass up my in-demand senior data dev skills because of some petty problem you have with my arm, I’ll get another job within an hour. Nose rings should not be a problem.

I just repierced mine and it’s a ring so I can’t flip it up but hoping on camera you can’t see it. I’d just get one you can flip up during work! That’s what I’ll do when we go back

you can get “Deloitted.” tatted anywhere with basically no repercussion, as long as you share it on LinkedIn #BrandAwareness

Nose rings are pretty common at workplace now a days. I did several projects in Oakland and people look at me weirdly because I don’t have any piercings or tattoos 😅
