How can we affect school culture to stop this from happening?
Unfortunately education is full of politics and it’s horrible!
My principal is the bully. It has meant a 1/3 faculty turn over every year I’ve been there. Even for a Title I school, that’s high
My current interim principal is a known bully. Intimidation tactics, public power plays and calling disciplinary meetings without notice. I think we are going to lose a lot of teachers still year. My goal is to not be known or noticed -since he should be gone in June.
It can happen at any point in your career. It is important to document any instances that are clear. If you are being bullied by an administrator hopefully you have a supportive union rep. who can help. It's strange how this seems to happen more often with women, from what I have seen and even experienced. Try to find other teachers outside of your grade or subject area who are friendly. Don't spend any time complaining about these people though. Do your best to connect with others and keep that positive.
I think this can happen at any work place. I don’t think it can be up to the individual to change anything, just work to avoid or leave a bad situation.
Join a teacher union or association. They have legal representatives who will give legal advice and have your back. Also, letting it be known that your a member can take the heat off from administrators who are bullies. It’s worked for me more than once.
I have seen some awful people, who honestly do not belong in the classroom: bullies toward students and fellow staff members alike! I did a happy dance just this year when a “Negative Nelly” left not only our school but the profession.
