Are the days of getting an MBA when you’re already in consulting (pre-MBA) over? What’s the value of it with direct promotion?

There’s value in the friends you make. Also value in taking two years off the treadmill to just focus on yourself. If you’re still single it’s not a bad place to date and you’ll likely come out with a high earning SO, which is itself a bit of a raise. If you want I to eventually switch careers it has value. If you ever want to get a long term work visa to a place like New Zealand it gives you more points toward qualification. Also you will likely learn some things.

Not gonna lie, the hope of finding an SO is near the top of my reasons to go to bschool 😂

From a purely financial perspective, probably better to go for direct promotion if that’s an option. Though for many it isn’t. However, an MBA is a pursuit (albeit expensive) that provides education and personal development that no number of years in consulting would equate to. Some people want more from life than just career progression. An MBA is one path among many. My 2 years at B were literally (literally) the best 2 years of my life.

Sure - I was 29, and it was for me a very practical consideration to make a career switch from a non-traditional background. Depending on the program you attend, the cohorts can be incredibly diverse. Something also about the common desire of finding a new path in life makes it a very introspective experience that, when shared with others, helps you to see yourself and your values in a different way. Beyond the self reflection and academics, there is also a healthy bit of leadership and a fair bit of fun and celebration to be had as well 😉

No. This is asked weekly.

As long as you go to a target school, yes it's worth it. Did nothing for my career but echoing someone else who replied: best 2 years of my life.

When you are going to take on $200k+ financial burden without knowing the future outlook...how can anyone be at ease of grasping and soaking everything the university/program has to offer? Say, you want to go on a study tour...first thing that comes to mind would be how much would it cost...instead of focusing on what I would learn on this tour?

I’m not sure you’re familiar with the American business school experience. Your point is not invalid. But the business case for most is pretty sound to go back. I challenge the idea that there is not significant upside. For many the upside ends up being quite significant. Anecdotally, our partners (at S&) say historically many of our most successful partners are those that left, went to b school and came back. Their networks and relationships helped. They were less burnt out and more well-rounded. I’m told there’s data that backs this up though I haven’t seen it. B school won’t be right for everyone, but there’s absolutely a set of people -even coming from consulting - for whom it’s a great thing.

Best 2 years of my life also! But that was a long time ago. Nowadays would people consider an alternative like a masters in finance or a coding bootcamp? I’m looking for more technical skills in staffing my teams.

Exit immediately into industry to try for accounting manager title / senior accountant or sr fin analyst 4. Exit immediately to advisory senior at another big 4 firm
