Are there any creatives in this bowl, or am I fooling myself? 😁

Me. This bowl really strays from the original gestalt of FIRE, which was about frugality and a high savings rate and being fine on less money than the traditional country-club definition of wealth. If you haven’t already read Mr Money Mustache— he’d be outraged by posts in this bowl along on the lines of “I need 20 million to retire.” SMH.

Creatives still paid a ton of money compared to most professions and we can FIRE easily.

I agree, Account Manager. I definitely adjusted my number as I saved. But I was reacting to OP who joked that creatives aren’t really represented in the numbers we’re reading here. People saying they NEED 3 mil to retire depresses others who will never have that much.

People tossing around the word “frugal” totally annoys me. Anyone who says they live “frugally”, yet is buying a 6k purse and needs millions to retire, has a different definition of “frugal” than the FIRE movement originally intended. “I need 3 million”—that’s called financial independence. Skip frugal.

Here to be sad mostly 🤣

Not a creative, but agency and media side. Idk how to get to these $300k+ HHI levels I'm seeing... I think we're in the wrong industry

We are forced to retire early. Have you ever seen a retirement party at an ad agency, ever?

funny

I know you’re joking but when was the last time you were ever at any retirement party? That’s not how the work world operates anymore. I know plenty of creatives in their 60s still working.

I mean, I’m here. But, it’s more to just remind myself that I 100% am doing this work life thing wrong. It’s my daily reminder to do better.

funny

I’m here cause there’s no one over the age of 50 at my agency. I’m 24 and it freaks me out.

like

Relax. I’m 61. I know plenty of creatives my age or older who work steadily. Just focus on saving a ton of money now so that when you’re older, you can relax and freelance if you want.

Any info on Rethink Toronto?

I’ve been struggling on whether or not I should talk to my boss about one of my assignments. I am an entry level HR analyst with one year of professional experience and she has tasked me with leading a strategic agency-wide project. This entails procuring a consultant, directing work of our senior analysts, leading a cross functional team to implement the project, point person, managing project timeline and deliverables, updating our policies and procedures to integrate the project, etc. To me, this is senior level work and should be done by the more senior analysts who have experience in this area. I understand it can be a great learning opportunity but feeling nervous. Thoughts?

Hi,
28 with about only 30k saved till now. Have worked 2.8 years and I feel I’m so behind. I’ve tried to save on everything possible but my family commitments make me feel I will never be able to retire - I make 95k a year and started at 82 base and 14k sign on in 2019. From 2019-2020 I had to help a family memes out of debt (approximately 30k). I started saving more aggressively in 2020 but then realized I’ll have to support my dad who’s business went under (1K every month-he’s in India so low

Hey y’all - I have a large amount (think $20K +) of credit card debt. I recently finished grad school and have enough to pay it all off, but a lot of my money is in stocks, mutual funds, etfs, etc.

Should I just liquidate and pay down the CC debt ASAP? Should I consolidate the CC debt into another loan? Curious how folks have thought about the right balance of debt vs investment.
