Are there any online data science programs/certifications that are worth the time and cost?

Or do you just learn on your own?

Depends on your math background. Need strong math to be useful in this area.

You also need some programming basics, regardless of the language. It makes it easier to work with R, for example.

C1 consultants don't make decisions bro. Anyway as a data scientist I probably get to make more decisions within the firm than most as we need investment in technology and data to be useful.

In terms of programs both Northwestern and Georgia Tech have online masters programs you can take. I've recruited at Northwestern's on campus program and the skill set there is good. I can't speak to the online program.

If you just want to learn the basics the John's Hopkins Coursera courses are quite good and you might couple those with the machine learning courses by Stanford.

Harvards certificate looks interesting

I majored in math and have been picking up R but never did any advanced programming (nothing more than a bit of java and python) .. I know there are a lot of free resources online just wondering if it is more beneficial to do a structured program

Data scientists don’t make any decisions bro ...

As long as they make money, they don’t need to make decisions.

The one by Andrew Ng is really good and will set you up to succeed as a data scientist if you have the aptitude for it.
