Are there any pros to staying at a company and getting laid off, vs. proactively looking for a new job and quitting before it happens? I.e., financial (possibility of receiving severance or any other benefits). Or is being laid off just all bad? I don’t know if my job is at risk — I don’t believe it is — but my agency lost some clients and is talking about cost cutting to be safe and get ahead of it. Fwiw, I’m ready for a change anyway.

Unless you’re wealthy, would recommend getting laid off vs. leaving. You’ll probably get a severance and may even get benefits coverage for a few months after. Plus you never know how long it’ll take to find another job.

Oh yeah I meant securing a new job before quitting, not quitting without a new one lined up.

I just got laid off last week after eight years with my company. They were bought by a larger company and they trimmed two senior Directors to make more on the deal. I wanted to leave but I was so overwhelmed with work that I had almost no free time to look. Now I can go on vacation without worrying about work and I have six months severance. But I still worry about finding a role that is what I want in that time, TBH.

Be proactive and look for a new job, you sound ready for it any way

I'm sure this varies by situation, but if you get laid off you get unemployment. Definitely factor that into the equation.

I am a 17 year seasoned outpatient PT in Tampa FL who is the current head PT for my clinic. I do marketing, admin duties as well as staffing. I haven’t gotten a base hourly salary raise in 8 years! Current salary is $85K. I am getting very frustrated that this has not increased even after asking. Thoughts? What to do? What do other seasoned FL PTs make?

The week of my wedding, my husband (PL SQL Developer 4 yoe) was laid off. That was a couple of weeks ago. Luckily I'm still bringing money in as a software engineer, but I'm looking for advice on how to support a partner who has been laid off. Ultimately I think we will be ok, but I know he's hurting / stressed / and could use a supportive partner.

I’ve spent my career on the internal/exec comms side of the house and am looking for a director role. I am getting some interest from recruiters, but the the roles seem to be focused on media relations. Is that typical?? I’ve managed external comms but it’s not my expertise. The roles do come with a broader comms team, so if I were to get one then it’s not like I would be on my own. Am I being insecure about not being experienced enough in media relations or is it ok?
