Are there any semi-affordable brands with a moonphase complication? I’m not expecting a fairly affordable brand like Tudor to have one, but I’m also not in the right tax bracket to spend $60k for a Patek

Tons. 10-20k Check out JLC, Blancpain, omega, breitling, Gerard pireageux, older cartier models, iwc, panerai, glashutte; longines also has moonphase watches closer to the Tudor range. Plenty to be had, where your money goes far is in the second hand market especially on a moonphase; would cautiously say your better going preowned here.

Moonphases are not inherently expensive to make - they should exist at most price points actually. If you are in the $1k -$5k range, check out Longines! And a favorite around here for $10k or so is JLC Ultra Thin Moon.

I have mixed feelings about the brand, but for a unique moon phase this Christopher Ward kind if works.....especially for a low price.

Little bit of a rant.

I have owned 4 Christopher Ward watches over the year, and yes, all 4 have had different branding. It does bother me avd I think it weakens the brand.

Although I have liked the watches, I have found that brands like Oris and Sinn are within reasonable ranges and are higher quality and have more consistent branding.

In general when looking across brands, watches are expensive due to high end finishing and hand work, not the complications in them (this is obviously a big generalization, excludes things like perpetual calendars and minute repeaters, etc. etc.).

Within a given brand, complications often have more components, leading to more work required, leading to higher prices. But most brands should have a variety of complications in whatever general price point they are in

No problem! There are a lot of very informed people on this bowl who like answering questions. Also my comment above really is a generalization and could be argued against, more just trying to say most typical complications exist in the market across very wide ranges of price points, depending on brand

The microbrand Zelos is launching a Moonphase later this month or early Jan - expect pricing well under $1k!

They offer great value - I just ordered this GMT with Aventurine dial for $900!

If you are in the 1-5k range and what a new version of a moonphase that looks the tits at night, look at the Christopher Ward. I love mine.

I’ve been obsessed with moon complications. Ball makes a pretty good moonphase that is relatively affordable

Ball watches are within 2-3k. If you’re looking for something a bit more luxury, Arnold and Son makes incredible moonphase watches.

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

And when they do push the envelope (OPs 2 years ago), they get discontinued 2 years later and pump prices up…
