Anyone here who works as an adjunct professor? How did your firm accept that? And how did you go through about it? I know we have those can’t work another job but I’ve seen some work as an adjunct while working with a Big 4 or other consulting firm. Any insight is appreciated!KPMG Deloitte Accenture EY PwC CGI Grant Thornton

A few other thoughts routing and scheduling problems are tough so places like FedEx, ups, amzn, wmt likely have great operations research folks. Oil & gas folks are running simulations on super computers. I've talked to folks in life sciences building very interesting models to simulate the spread of alzheimers through the brain.
I’d argue that the problems we work on typically as consultants are boring and often trivial
Netflix wasn’t mentioned above, their science and algos team is top-notch.
Consulting isn’t conducive to data science given coat and time constraints. BCG’a reputation is up there, but they fall well short of the mark set by tech.
Tech firms
Like Google, Fb, etc.? As a data scientist, they’re the “holy grail” of companies to work for?
Yes. Top data science talent flock to tech companies for top dollar. Think about this: most tech companies have their own core data science teams with phDs, why would they outsource interesting data science projects to consultants?
Google, amazon, Facebook and Microsoft have the best reputations.....however many of the best developers/quants/d.s. are working on their own stuff
Are data science roles at funds such as Two Sigma/Citadel even more top tier than FAANG?
Check out prop shops and Palintir as well! Heard the talent they take are the best out of FAANG
I don't know how these companies compare to consulting firms but places like civis, tango, and alluvium look really interesting.
HF/prop shops are a different ball game. They've been at this stuff for a long time but the models aren't always that complicated as execution speed can be a large priority. I haven't followed trading tech for a while though.
Agreed, I don’t think FAANG uses consultants for the real hardcore stuff. For one, they don’t want to share their strategies and solutions - which is what would most likely happen. Also, business model of big4 is to throw senior associates at problems, not experienced msc/phds.
