You won’t get $200K in Chicago with 4 years of experience as a product manager.

I do :)

Recently promoted manager, two years in tech consulting and two in strategy

There are extremely few jobs in chicago that pay 200k for 4 YOE. Citadel or banking probably pays that, but that’s about it

Its not impossible, but I generally agree with VP1 – you may get close to 200K in consulting as A1 is, but leaving consulting for industry, you will probably not, as the roles major tech firms hire for most in Chicago don’t typically come with the same comp as product/engineering roles. I’m a product manager w/ ~8 YOE, my TC is around $185K. I think that’s pretty solid for Chicago. Big tech doesn’t hire for a lot of product roles in Chicago. It’s sort of changing due to covid making companies consider more full time remote roles, so look into companies who are doing that and may still offer the lucrative comp packages they typically do. However, also keep in mind that my 185K in Chicago is probably similar or better than making 300K in SF/Silicon Valley. The reason those big tech companies pay what they do out there is because they have to in order to compete, but you don’t need that kinda comp in Chicago.

I got 150K base and about 200K total comp on 4 YOE in DC. It’s possible but you need to look really hard.

I’m trying to stay positive but I am just so burnt out right now. I thought working at an agency in planning was going to be a dream role closer to strategy, but I’m less and less motivated every day because of the hours and the lack of opportunity outside of in the weeds, niche tasks. I worry about how my output will be if I don’t find a role I enjoy more with more of a WLB. Has anyone else fallen out of love with media planning, and if so where did you go?

Question (probably most relevant for big four tax/audit folks). I was living in the UAE for 3 years (tax-free country). For US citizens exclusion amount is ~$105k I believe. My wages from Jan-June 2020 were earned in Dubai, I moved home at the end of June 2020. I also had a bonus that was due in March but payments were scattered over 4 months between Sep 2020-Dec 2020/Jan 2021. Does anyone know if I will be required to pay tax on the income earned between Jan-June 2020 and/or the bonus? Thanks!
