Are utilization targets strict at every consulting firm? I know we complain a lot at Deloitte but I’m not sure if it’s the same everywhere

We don’t have utilization targets.

like

At EY too

like

We have them and they are strict from the standpoint that we plan to them, but you can miss them as long as you’re socializing it and there’s a justifiable reason.

like

We don’t have utilization targets for managers or below

Think utilization is a big 4/acn/boutique thing. I don’t believe mbb has targets but could be wrong.

We also don’t have utilization targets

like

Accenture has them, and yes they are pretty strict

Ours are rigidly set as targets for everyone but not rigidly enforced. If you're low at year end and have a solid business reason why (eg spent a lot of time on business development that was approved), nothing bad will happen. It's really only a ding if you're on the bench consistently and not getting picked up on engagements because people understand you're not great to have on their team.

Never heard of utilization targets. Partners may have them but we don’t see them as lowly Associates.

We have utilization targets. Missing util by 1% doesn't cause problems, but missing by more than 15 or so really raises eyebrows. You cannot be in the top performance bucket (out of 3 buckets: exceeds, meets, does not meet expectations) if you miss util target, thus slashing bonus potential.

Milbank matched DPW scale. Plus/minus 50% for associates with above 110% or below 80% “utilization” through 9/6 (including pro bono and legal work for firm). To be paid by Oct 30. December bonus expected to be no less than last year. Good for management and consistent with (imho) strong leadership during COVID.

For utilization, if the denominator is fixed to 2080 (40 x 52), there is no way you can be a 100% utilized even if you're staffed throughout the year and bill 8 hours per business day?

What happens if you don’t meet utilization targets in a year? I switched from audit to advisory and have been here 2 months and my billable hours are way less than I was expecting (avg 30 a week). What time frame is used to measure our utilization metric? I'm pretty sure it's not our fiscal year, but sometime around April '16 - March '17?

Anyone in DT think that the utilization reports with everyone's name they send to all seniors and above is just a obnoxious shaming tactic ?

EY's fiscal year ends in June and effective July 1st utilization resets. How fitting that there is a heavy emphasis on keeping utilization up in the coming weeks. 😂
