Are you all really dropping the mask?

Live in part of the country where masks were never mandated and infection rates were always manageable. I wear a mask only when required and those locations are becoming fewer and fewer. Have traveled to other cities and I am amazed when I see people walking outdoors with masks. There were literally no outdoor transmissions. The viral load required for infection required close, prolonged contact.

like

Really, literally none, seems extreme, how could you even prove that; either way, the upside of wearing masks indoors seems to far outweigh downside, so I will continue even though vaccinated. I do know people vaccinated that got Covid. Good news the symptoms were very mild, bad news one is at risk of missing her high school graduation due to testing positive. I think there is probably a high correlation between folks that dont want vaccine and wont wear mask, no easy way to sort that out when you are in a crowded place and why put children under 12 at risk

Recent IconRecent

Absolutely.

If the science says it's fine to unmask when you're vaccinated, why not follow it? 🤷

Not doubting the science... doubting other people’s adherence to science. And it can be both science and politics. I think this rapid demasking the last week (Chicago) is based on politics (the last stage of vaccinations weren’t even eligible for second dose until today!) and is going to enable a lot of anti maskers and 1st dozers to eschew masks wearing to avoid (baseless) embarrassment and feeling socially left out (which is a huge motivator). This in turn could potentially accelerate vaccine resistant variants since 1st dosers are not fully vaxxed giving the virus easy prey).

Of course. I don’t wear my Measles, Mumps, or Rubella masks either. Because I’m vaccinated.

like

Yeah, I get you. The problem is what we still don’t know. Two days ago, 8 NY Yankees players tested positive for the virus, even after all 8 of them had been vaccinated. That kind of breakout strain is still a very real risk and they could transmit to anyone else not vaccinated. This is a primary driver of mutated strains that become even more vaccine-resistant, which puts all vaccinated people back at risk. We just don’t know enough about who can/can’t still be a carrier. I’d personally rather not be the one in the small exception to the science and make my own kids (someone else’s kids) sick.

like

No - still a large number of people who chose not to get the vaccine and will continue to be a risk to the greater population. I for one will continue to wear a mask in all group settings unless I’m with a close group of friends and family who are vaccinated.

likesmartfunny

Why do you care if you’re vaccinated? We can’t all live in fear.

like

Outdoors yes. Not quite indoors. Need to wait till the kids are vaccinated to let the guard down entirely.

likesmart

Makes sense. We’re starting to have more in person meetings and I still plan on keeping the mask on in all indoors work situations.

Children under 18 were never at risk. We continue to not only shift the goal posts, we are not even playing the same sport. We continue to send the wrong message when vaccinated people where masks anywhere. The goal never was and cannot be zero positive tests. The goal has to be reduced transmission and minimized severity. Between the vaccines and treatments, we are there.

This thread is very concerning. All, please refer to the data and filter out the Cnn and Fox rhetoric. If you believe the CDC data high risk people have a 99.5 pct survival rate. Younger people and children are even at less risk. In addition, if you have the patience to decipher the CDC data, CDC reports those who have died have had a comorbidity so in other words C19 has been the catalyst and final straw for those unfortunate people. Totally supportive of those who believe in the vaccine but IMO there is no justification for mass vaccination with a product approved under emergency order which has already been linked to the death of thousands of people. C19 is not tetanus where 100pct die if you get it. Yes C19 spreads easier than flu but death rates are the same. Fauci has even admitted and said the vaccine does not stop spread, it stops clinical disease. We are also ignoring the population who have had Covid and now test positive for the antibodies. High risk people should continue to social distance and where masks. I believe the rest of us should have the choice. As a whole, while I believe it is a choice we should continue to follow risk mitigating guidelines like social distancing and mask wearing indoors until we are past the variant risk. That said, the main point of my post it to clarify the risk and what the vaccine does so we are making decisions and commenting in the right context.

Only when sitting outdoors eating. Otherwise, still masking up - including when walking outside.

The (cloth) masks were never about protecting you from getting infected, they were about reducing the likely radius at which you could infect others by covering your exhales and coughs. Idea being if everyone wore them, it'd help protect the group as a whole.

Unless you're wearing N95 masks or respirators, you're not really protecting yourself by wearing a mask.

Even CDC themselves say this.

Not yet. I don’t want to become a carrier and infect my kids. No thank you.

I don’t wear my mask when running anymore. But I’m going to keep it in public places for a while. It prevents me from touching my face and not having caught a cold in 15 months has been fantastic.

like

Seriously this - I don’t miss colds. Masks on the subway are a great idea and one I hope many of us voluntarily keep even if we eradicate COVID entirely. Masks on the street, I hope not.

I’m curious what will happen to this generation of very young children who never really left the house. Never were exposed to germs of any sort. Not even basic socialization.

Like every generation, these kids will also turn out great

Definitely

Nope. The issue is the trumpers, who still think the virus is a hoax. I’m sad to say I’m related to some.

Yes

I’m vaccinated so yes, as long as the establishment doesn’t require it

Dropping it outdoors - I don’t plan to go to crowded places, but will continue to wear one indoors.

No. I’m a Libertarian, so if the government says we can drop the masks I am going to wear one.

Yup.

At the gym right now and about 20% are maskless but they aren't the fit. Instead it's the older and the more obese. Mine will stay on until the kids are vaccinated

likefunny

Not yet. Until all kids are able to get vaccinated, and we get more adults vaccinated, the risk is still too big. 99.7% of current hospitalizations are unvaccinated people. And the more the variants mutate, the greater the risk of a vaccine-resistant strain emerging, which could put the whole country back to square one again.

I’m 12 weeks along and trying to figure out when the best time to tell leadership (RL, Coach) and team members? With this economy I don’t want the pregnancy to influence anything and since we’re not traveling I really could hide it for quite a while longer. In non-covid times I likely would have shared when I start showing, but not sure what the best move is here. Any suggestions? [P.S. this was a long time coming and both RL and coach knew I was going through fertility treatments]

This is making rounds on LinkedIn

Let me try to answer the ‘why’:
1. Covid is like flu as per trump , so I don’t know why tf this is coming up as a big deal. Many essential workers are working through it and dying. So OK
2. Most people work all life . Though most don’t get a lot of $ from their parents
3. POTUS is the one of the most powerful positions in the world. Why a narcissist, conspiracy theorist who loves to chase limelight would want that?
4. Most hated- I agree. Why is that?!

I had a bad case of COVID back in January and had lost my taste/smell for about three months. It slowly came back, not totally normal but close to normal. Then about 2-3 weeks ago, I’ve totally lost taste and smell again? Fully vaxxed since April, no symptoms and no positive tests, just complete loss of taste and smell again. Is it a lingering on again/off again thing? Thanks!
