Are you open to share your salary with your current coworkers? Why or why not?

For some reason people tend to feel as though if they’re making less than coworkers they should be embarrassed. Truthfully, it gives you a good benchmark for asking for a raise, or if you’re concerned you’re underpaid you can confirm/reject the assumption. Also there’s nothing wrong with saying, for example, “I’m just a around $120k” if you don’t want to share specifically. And if you have a good friend who shares similar education & experience and you trust the person perhaps you two can share privately the exact numbers. But this practice help everyone. You shouldn’t want your coworkers to be underpaid and unhappy. And if you feel like you deserve more money than A coworker and you’re not paid significantly more then you know what to ask for at YE.

like

M3 I think your approach should be a bit more aggressive. You’re only underpaid when the market would pay you more than youre currently getting. You have two options: - if you like where you’re at, get a market assessment of your worth (find an outside offer) and get your company to match (if you’re below pay at your level this should be no problem) -if you don’t like where you’re at, leave I’ve been in a similar situation to you, twice. Showing management that you won’t take their low ball and you’re at risk of attrition usually works. If it doesn’t, I doubt it’s a place you want to be working at anyway.

Oh don’t worry, I’m already actively interviewing at other places and looking to leave my firm soon 😁

Be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Surely you’ll want someone to look at your life in it’s full context rather than focus on the things they don’t like about you.

Happy to share. Unpopular opinion but I don’t get why money or income is a taboo topic. I certainly make more than some people and I certainly make less than others. Everyone is so always so curious how they measure up against their peers but how can you accurately do this without transparency?

Yes I do

If someone asks me yes. I once told a manager of mine I felt underpaid and he asked how much I made, I told him and he agreed and I later found out he went to bat for me and got me an adjustment.

Back when I was at another big 4 I came in with slightly more experience than the fresh undergrads but was getting paid the same. I eventually figured out the disparity thanks to those who openly shared their salaries. I spoke to the partner and did get a market adjustment. Hope this encourages more people to share.

As a rule of thumb, I start my meetings, internal and external, stating my salary. Once the laughs settle down, I go ahead with my agenda.

Never. Why would you do this?....

To make the labor market more efficient that’s why.

I mean on the Accenture bowl we just dropped over a 1k data points during this raise cycle.

I’m an open book whenever anyone asks But I tend not to work with a lot of people who doesn’t find it stigmatizing Like others have said, being transparent helps build salary equality

Yes. You always should. You’re only giving the employer the upper hand if you hide it. Why would you?!

Not a good idea sharing it with everyone, maybe just with people of your level otherwise you may generate bad vibes.

like

Disagree! Comp transparency helps everyone.

We have a transparent salary grid. No questions. No ranges. No concerns.

like

I completely agree that employee salaries should be transparent. If I'm being underpaid, I'd like to know the reason why if I'm doing the same quality of work. Likewise if I'm being paid more than someone else, I'd like to let them know so they can get an increase as well. CEOs and execs are in the millions of dollars a year, and yet we shouldn't discuss our peanuts salary amongst each other? Why? If I'm making 100k and my coworker with same year of experience, same skillet is at 80k something, where's the 15-20k go to?

like

I shared how much I was leaving for with my coworkers. Helped them to see how much they were being screwed over.

^It is a personal choice. Some people equate their value, status, importance, or negotiating skill to how high their base pay is. Others view it as just like any other number. Not knowing, when you and your colleagues have no power to change disparity that may exist, can be better for morale and focus. Pay disparity within a salary band for the same role can be justified for a number of legal reasons. Employers have latitude and need not pay everyone the same base pay who performs the same work.

Given the narrowing boundaries between testing and dev, which position is better in the long run? I thought it'd be SDET. But, I'd like to have expert/experienced opinion.
