Happy to share. Unpopular opinion but I don’t get why money or income is a taboo topic. I certainly make more than some people and I certainly make less than others. Everyone is so always so curious how they measure up against their peers but how can you accurately do this without transparency?
In the US employers cannot prohibit discussions of pay. Illegal to do so under the https://www.nlrb.gov/rights-we-protect/rights/employee-rights
Now, use good judgment how and when to do it as it can create resentment and discord in the workplace.
Transparency only helps the employees, I wish it wasn’t seen as a taboo
Depends, if I am the CEO or owner, then no. Employees sharing salary forces you to pay them fairly and makes them harder to rip off. If I am an employee then of course! I would like to know I am being treated fairly.
Yes! Secrecy only gives corporation more power to screw over employees
All for sharing my total comp. Transparency only helps each other
Yes. The only ones benefiting from lack of transparency are the big companies, not the employees
No because I know I’m drastically underpaid, have tried to renegotiate with no success, and don’t want coworkers to give me a sad smile and say that’s too bad
The reality is that there is no exact fairness in salary, people have different skill set, different specialities, work in aligned to different industries, some people may have hot skills, billing hours may be different etc. there’s no equitable pay and doesn’t have to. I remember I had that convo with a director, he told me I couldn’t earn more since I would be earning more than other peers and left the company for a huge salary bump.
Understand your industry and the market, learn hot skills and improve your negotiation skills, that’s what is going to actually help closing salary gaps that you may have.
Of course. Why not?
transparent as hell
Yes. Not with everyone but certain ones. It’s how I knew what to ask for when I job hopped and vice versa.
I share both salary plus bonus %
I used to be ok revealing but not anymore. I feel I’m getting paid too much for what I do...we have transparent ranges but I’m above our published ranges.
Honestly, luck and timing.
