Are you or have you been the sole HR person at the company? What are the pros & cons? I haven’t been, but a recruiter reached out with an opportunity to be one. They currently use the parent company’s HR but are buying themselves out to be a stand alone firm. TIA!

I have. In fact this is my third company as the sole HR. Many pros and cons but to list a few you will be the sole policy dictator. You will be the go to for all things HR and administrative related. You may get to do things your own way and work on your own schedule. But it may also be overwhelming knowing where to start because you will have little to zero guidance. Do everything by the book and document stuff because you will also bear the blame if the ball drops anywhere. You will literally be a one man marching band!

I’ve done both and find that I thrive in a department of one role. It is key to foster strong relationships throughout the HR community and have strong resources in place when you need a second opinion.

I would guess that this is a tough time to be the sole resource in HR given additional responsibility related to covid. Not sure if others would agree.

I have been a single person HR team in one of my earlier roles. On the positive front you will have a lot of freedom to innovate and shape things the way you want to. On the flip side you will not have support required to delegate tasks or share workload. Plus it’s always more fun to work with a team.

I was the sole HR for a little over a year until recently. It’s actually a really great experience if you are looking to master all HR paths, however it can be heavily administrative which needs to be balanced with a lot of the strategic work and thought leadership that comes inherently when working with an executive team. You have to be able to clearly articulate and help the business understand the limitations to having a lean HR dept and set clear expectations when tasked larger initiatives. Also, if you’re a perfectionist, understand that it takes time to build a decent infrastructure (especially since, if the company is looking to bring in their own HR separate to the parent company HR, they’re probably looking to make a few process changes!) - you may find yourself using bandaid processes until you have time to hunker down and build something scalable. Good luck!

I’ve been the sole HR person and wouldn’t do it again unless it was as the tip of the spear, with assurances for the resources to grow my team.

I am one. But fortunate to have an HR consultant freelancing as well. Without her, its hard because you cant get the buy-ins. A team of two is perfect!

I have been, early on in my career. It was difficult as I felt I lacked mentorship, but fun and rewarding to be solely responsible for designing processes that helped the business.

I just resigned my HRM job about a month ago after 3 and a half years. I have over 15 years in HR so being the sole HR wasn’t an issue. If you were to find a great company with a culture, ethics, in legal compliance and etc - you will do great! If they aren’t these basic things then you will have nothing but issues and you can only last so long in a bad work environment.

like

Ugh that’s my issue. They don’t have the basics so I’m struggling to keep a lid on all issues and it’s only been 4 days into my employment

We started with a head of finance who helped run operations and HR arm to really keep us safe. That seems to be a pretty common path into it. But then we promoted a director on our biz side who had great training experience prior to run People - and started to take over anything that made us safe and brought myself on to help with people - groomed the People team into 2 people : one to handle talent and one to handle community and then she moved on to do something else and the community manage and I run a lot of culture aspects together and finance has those HR duties again. Our coo just started but I imagine we might bring in another HR specialist to only handle the things that keep us safe while I help the teams grow, community helps keep the people fulfilled and that person does truly become the sole HR/Rewards person. So in the scheme of all of this it might be interesting to know where in a growth path like this you may be shouldering And that would determine the things that might seem more daunting or more exciting to you. You will likely shoulder a lot for a year or so but I would try to understand what the company’s building plans might look like and what they envision you taking over or having the chance to take over later?

I was the sole HR at a growing company and kept getting pulled into admin and hiring so that HR really didn't get enough love. I worked insane hours but made all the decisions. It was a bittersweet time, but I kind of miss it.
