Are you pro sharing your salary with others or keeping it quiet? If you were on a group call with 3 other women employees sharing their salaries, same YOE and same role, would you feel pressured to share yours? I did not feel comfortable as I make significantly more but want them to know.

You should tell them. Keeping that information to yourself kind of does them a disservice. I always tell other women, especially WoC, my salary because there is a clear wage gap. It helps people advocate for themselves.

I want to hear opinions on the situation, but as a follow up I did end up sharing and know that they advocated in themselves resulting in a immediate salary correction!!

Awesome!!

I will share my salary with people in my industry or firm who aren't on the same team as me. Reason being, I've had coworkers use my salary as leverage to try and get raises when my experience, background, and performance were significantly different than theirs. They also mentioned me by name and my manager later asked me about it and it was a very uncomfortable situation. So I'd say, share with people you trust or share anonymously but exercise discretion when its people on your team.

This! I had someone do something similar and it took some damage control to get back in good graces. Sharing salaries are good when people have similar skill sets, roles, experience, etc but if not it’s comparing apples to oranges.

If I trust them. I have shared my salary in the past with close friends at the same company.

We should absolutely become more transparent about our pay in the US because employers use that secrecy as a tool to their benefit. Let’s get it straight there is no benefit to the employees being secretive, It only works to the employers benefit. If you are getting paid more than the people doing the same work at the same level it should be your responsibility to elevate the conversation. #EqualPayForEqualWork

I always share my salary with close friends and colleagues who ask. I believe it helps them better advocate for themselves. Likewise, I appreciate when others are able to share that data as well so I can keep it in mind for future salary negotiations.

We have standardised salary based on tenure. Makes any salary discussion easier - like even externally to friends or whatever, as I’m like ‘you can Google it quite easily’.

What varies is our bonus which few people discuss as it’s tied to performance.

I think it’s healthy to discuss to an extent but read the room. E.g. I have friends I know earn under half of what I do, based on their role, the company and the market. I avoid the topic with them, unless they bring it up. Whereas I have other friends in consulting, IB or law, and it’s a relatively normal topic.

There is something to be said for companies can continue to pay people un equitably if people don’t know. I think I would rather know I get paid less than others and be a able to ask for an adjustment. On the flipside it would make me question my companies practices of paying people equitably and I might look elsewhere.

I always do and I appreciate it when colleagues (especially of the same background/years of experience) share theirs. As a poc there has often been a gap in pay between me and my white colleagues, especially those doing the same work and with less experience. Them sharing have helped me make decisions that are the best for career.

I’m not trying to protect the firm in any way. I share. If the firm has a problem with this, I would really peg that on them and start questioning my tenure.

I would imagine that would ruin any future plans of traveling where testing is required, even though you’re not contagious anymore and fully vaccinated by then.
