I used to live back east and the unions in New York and New Jersey were fantastic they actually protected the teachers. I now live in Colorado where it is a right to work state. Even though there are associations that are supposed to protect teachers the association representatives are in bed with superintendents. There is absolutely no protection for teachers in this state. The evaluation process for teachers is a joke. The employee agreements drawn up are not followed and the union does not stand behind its own employee agreement. Colorado needs to get up-to-date with everything in education.

Absolutely! I had a friend move to Colorado, got a teaching job. She is a highly specialized special education teacher, an absolute gem. She had a miserable year. I was shocked at the lack of respect towards teachers from administrators, the unprofessionalism making teaching assignment, poor leadership from superintendent, and teachers who promoted it! I’m so sorry. ☹️

Union. I’m a teacher in California, Silicon Valley, and my union in San Jose, goes to bat for us. I need job security and pay that helps me live in the most expensive place to live in the country. Some districts have even joined forces in the Bay Area to have each other’s back to make sure other teachers are being paid a decent salary. I stay out of the super political part of union matters, because it’s just not for me. However, I attend our school union meetings and pay dues and vote. I’m very grateful for all the union reps and presidents!

Union, I am one of the Building reps at my school.

like

Me too. Strength in numbers, especially in FL. We just got an email two counties are in danger of their union being disbanded due to low membership. 😢 When I was in NY, NYSUT was not an option, you were a member. There's a lot of support and I don't like society hates unions. History will repeat itself, if not worse. .... And I'll stop here bc I can go on and on.

Union and a building rep. With everything going on in my district, we need our union more than ever. If our CEO had his way, we’d be making $20k, working 12+ hours a day year round with 50 kids in our classrooms (class size doesn’t matter 🙄) while his unqualified friends make $100k (currently happening) and POS pop up companies he’s on the board for are now vendors in our district.

That's too bad. Once cronyism that builds its own "power base" gets going, it becomes harder to fight it. Case in point: Betsy Devos as head of Federal DOE. Her husband, Dick Devos, a Michigan business man, has a charter school in Michigan. How is that NOT a conflict of interest? However, belonging to a union, can help get the word out. Here's an excerpt from an article: Randi Weingarten, the president of AFT, stated that "Betsy DeVos is everything Donald Trump said is wrong in America--an ultra-wealthy heiress who uses her money to game the system and push a special-interest agenda that is opposed by the majority of voters. Installing her in the Department of Education is the opposite of Trump's promise to drain the swamp." Also, belonging to a union can inform you who is doing what so that you can make an informed decision before voting. THIS IS WHY I'M PRO UNION!!! Like I stated before, big biz gets its way with its lobbyists. We teachers need our lobbyists: Teachers' Unions!

I'm in OEA/NEA. Yes, they are too political. And I actually dropped for 3 years when we we're really tight on money I work in an amazing district with great administrators. But being part of a larger body of teachers helps balance the tables. I don't want to have to automatically rely on the goodwill & good judgement of our admin. To me it's similar to a marriage. I love my husband and know he's a wonderful man. But I'm not going to sign over all my power to him. Just sayin.

My thoughts: If you work in a public school and reap the benefits of union negotiations then you pay your dues. After all, you would not have the salary, benefits or working conditions you enjoy without said union.

like

Union. I’ve seen too many double standards, rights not respected, and inequality to not be a member. No one likes to pay the fees, but without them we are at the mercy of the district! We HAVE to stand together !

Union and proud. After working in several schools without one, I enjoy being part of one now.

I am union. I have worked in a few private schools where it was not an option to be in a union. I watched teachers get fired for getting pregnant, for taking a leave of absence because her husband died. I've heard from other co-workers that before they were union they saw other teachers fired midyear because test scores didn't improve "enough." Collective power is important, and absolutely necessary in our field.
