We concept the scripts together, I write it, then we go through it together and discuss and revise
Same here 🙋🏻♂️
No, this is exactly what it should be. Complete separation of roles is bullshit. At some point, the craft should go to those who master it. But ideas need to be shaped together.
Op said scripts, not jdeas for the scripts though.
FCW1 so can you do some designing too? Just for some friendly competitions of course.
No. Ideally for me, my AD partner would write scripts as well — sort of as a friendly competition. Tall ask, I know, but a girl can dream. However, if they don’t even want to see scripts before creative check ins, that’s when I start to get grouchy.
@AD4, totally agree.
So much of the script is visual notes. They should definitely be part of the process. Not to mention, if it’s between an AD and a CW going on the shoot, the AD usually gets to go.
OP do you work on layouts for banner ads? Do you make detailed comps for design inclined clients?
By your description, it seems fair you would use ps and actually comp stuff. In your spare time learn how to use the tools better and such, no?
A good creative team should constantly be saying “hey, what do you think about this?” And providing feedback to eachother about all aspects of the creative work.
Sometimes my partner writes their own scripts that are fucking terrible but have an idea behind them, and then I rewrite it based off the idea.
I don't have a partner but a copy-based CD. I send CD loglines/synopsis when I present. If CD likes anything, CD builds or even write a full script to be sold to client.
We concept together. I usually jot down notes, visual directions, or some lines as my CW writes the skeleton. Sometimes, if the overall concept was one I felt strongly about I'll take a crack at writing it myself. (I've had a few scripts go to client so I'm a decent writer & they trust me)
We compare notes. Blend and kill where necessary to get to the best spot.
In my partnership, you wouldn’t know where one starts and the other ends. All of the concepting is done together and if they’ve got a better line it’s the one that ends up in the deck and if i’ve got a better visual direction that’s what goes in the deck. It’s OUR work after all.
