I don’t build in too much small talk if I’m getting work assigned because I know the partners are busy and often don’t want to hassle them with questions. So usually I get assigned work by email, maybe send some follow up questions and then get the work to them when they asked for it. Usually if it’s a one off task, I either hear nothing or just get an acknowledgement and then nothing else. I’ve also tried getting feedback at a later time and they still are busy. If anyone has some strategies about how I can be better at building relationships, it’d be greatly appreciated.
Start by setting up virtual coffee chats with both partners and associates and then follow up for work. Don’t spam but use a targeted approach for areas you’re interested in. I suggest asking the associates which partners to reach out to. There are usually only a handful of partners in each group that work a lot with students and make the calls re about hireback. This includes anyone on the student committee. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of networking with associates - they often select the student(s) on their deal team and have the partner ear re hireback.
