USI Insurance brokerage and consulting - thoughts? A recruiter reached out to me via linked in and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this company. They seem to have decent reviews on Glassdoor but I was hoping to get more insight into workload and comp. Thanks in advance! USI
I am an in-house attorney that has experience advising businesses and structuring teams on Markets structured products & financing in a global bank. Financing experience is certainly valued in this space, and it’s good that you’re doing this now. Some of this work is very good (vanilla) grounding for going to to the structured financing space. If you want to work in a law firm, you’ll have to get into a firm (usually a big global firm) where there is such a team that specialises in this area. One segway into this could be to be an attorney / associate who works in the Derivatives / Financial Markets and Trading space, because quite a bit of the legal work that happens in this area is / is closely related to structured products and financing. Banks often want to find bespoke and structured solutions for clients needs, where vanilla Markets products and offerings aren’t able to meet their needs — and this is one area where episodic but big ticket structuring solutions get developed and offered to clients. Just my two cents.
Thanks for this!
Biglaw or bust
Structured finance is actually a very complex and broad practice (and if I may say so, a really interesting area). Commercial loans are a great way to start. If you’re not in a law firm I’d suggest taking your commercial loan experience and trying to go be legal support at a structuring desk at a bank. Happy to discuss more if you want in a DM.
I agree that experience in a non-legal structuring role can certainly be very helpful for someone who wants to work as an attorney in this area — and vice versa. I know at least two attorneys who went in-house in a global bank, and moved into very well-paying structuring roles on the business side thereafter.
