At RSM probably doesn’t affect first year associates we just assume you don’t know anything but as long as your teachable/coachable and don’t continuously make the same mistakes you’ll be fine.
In general though, only your end of year rating affects bonus. Utilization may be a factor in determining that rating but it’s not the only factor. I’ve seen people with low utilization get full bonus and promoted.
Partners and managers typically know what’s going on. If you’re putting in a lot of hours on a job because the client is bad vs if you’re putting in a lot of hours because you’re bad they will know.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that. If your high performing you can get the game changer rating which pays out higher than 100%
I just think your utilization has to be significantly bad for anyone to really ding you for it. Ultimately as a first year don’t really have a lot of control, you don’t really get a choice in your jobs, you kind of just do the work assigned to you and try to finish it in the time frame the senior tells you it should take a first year associate. If you do that your utilization will fall in line with the rest of the office.
First year associates very rarely get promoted - long internship stints at the same firm is the only way
