Great article - also found the section below to be interesting. I’m hoping employers become more open to allowing remote work post pandemic! According to U-Haul’s annual review, California lost more people to out-migration than any other state in 2020, and the five largest states in the Northeast—New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Maryland—joined California in the top 10 losers. Rents have fallen fastest in “pricey coastal cities,” including San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York City, according to Apartment List. Zillow data also show that home values in New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., are growing below the national average.

This is purely anecdotal but I’m trying to move out of NYC. I tried to get a uhaul in Brooklyn for the end of the month and there was only one available and it was like “tentatively available.” PODS is heavily booked as well in their city service. I’m not implying a mass exodus or anything but I’ve never had issues with scarcity of these services in the past.

Even if people can move further away from their HQ office nowdays, cities will still always be where culture, art, social events, humanity flourish most ... Civilization in cities is a secular trend many millennia in the making, it's not going to just stop now because of Zoom. Maybe if you have a family you don't need to be in a city... but if you're young or single or have big aspirations? Long term, where does that personality want to live?

Why live when you can visit frequently? Wouldn’t you have a better life in a more comfortable space, then take a weekend visit to your favorite city for the whatever it is you love instead? Like, if I love Broadway it doesn’t make a ton of sense to pay 1k/mo more to live a subway ride away when there’s so many trains into the city that let me live in a house with a backyard. The only reason to live there is if I’m forced to park a butt in a chair right? That extra 1k or more a month can cover a hotel room for a weekend twice a month if I need it to, and I get points that rent doesn’t get me to boot. I get it if you’re single and you think the only way to meet your soul mate is at a hyper focused social event that only exists in a niche location made possible when there’s 10 million people around, but maybe that isn’t necessarily true. Myself I want to be close to a city but I’m sure not interested in rent for a shoebox ever again.

For most employees (entry - mid career), these moves will continue to be temporary. The fact is that there will always be plenty of people who are willing to go back to the office, whether it’s to compete for raises/promotions, pay face time to leadership, or just to more organically build a network at work with others in the office (instead of idk, forcing Zoom meetings on people’s calendars). Many who don’t acknowledge this are often later in their careers, and are less worried about “moving up,” and are rather more concerned with things like raising a family, settling down in suburbs, etc. Of course, making the same paycheck while being able to stay at home seems more attractive to this group. Until remote work can fully replicate the level of communication and connection that being in the office gives, employees who decide to go into the office more will always have a leg up. Office space might be downsized, but there will still be plenty of people who decide to return to the office once everyone is vaccinated.

Asking for my spouse. She is five months pregnant and has a amazon offer. She works for Deloitte too. Deloitte definitely has a better maternity leave but amazon is doubling her take home salary. Also agreed to work from home for two years. Thoughts? Stress wise her Deloitte practice ( strategy) is probably as stressful or more as compared to amazon role so it literally boils down to maternity benefits for us.

Hi! I have two offers and I’m not sure what to do. One is with a small firm that serves as outside counsel to medical practices (leasing, employment issues and acquisitions are primary work load) and the other is in-house for a pharmaceutical company (managing outside counsel, vendor contracts, privacy). The firm pays much better (1800 hours, flexible wfh) but I feel like the experience in house would go further in becoming a GC down the road. Please help!

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Need to move to the burbs w/fiancee, but where? Staying in BK is not an option, though we will eventually work in the city 1-2 days/week (someday?). Won't do long island, need a 2 car garage w/space to work on cars and also space for a woodshop whether it's in basement or elsewhere. Planning on having kids and because we'll work from home a lot still need office space. I grew up in burbs and it wasn't so bad because I lived walking distance to train station into the city & nice downtown. 800k!

Anxiety and stress are crippling my ability to succeed. I have social anxiety which makes wfh communication extremely difficult. Managers - how much patience would you have with someone who was doing well pre-pandemic but has been struggling ever since? Should I start planning for a new job? (In case I get fired)
