As a junior lawyer, what’s a good way to ask seniors that review your work for more feedback on a particular piece of work? Sometimes I feel like they review writing and provide little to no comments because it’s not substantively wrong but, based on feedback I get from others, I know there’s areas for improvement (and people always have personal preferences, which are helpful to know, too). I know it takes someone much longer to give this feedback so any thoughts/suggestions welcomed!

I tend to try to direct them to areas I want more feedback on. Asking about particular arguments has tended to get me the most helpful feedback.

For writing, it can be easy. Ask them to send you the final version of whatever you wrote after they have edited it (assuming they are editing it and sending it along and not making you do the edits). That way, you can run a comparison and see what they changed and they don’t have to go through the effort to tell you edit by edit what they did and why which can be time consuming. Ask them specifically about any edits you don’t understand rather than asking for broader feedback.

This is what I've always done. Running those redlines can be brutal at first (everything is red!)

Both comments above are excellent. Those would both be my suggestions.

I love working at the bookstore and I'm proud to work with such a large group of people from different backgrounds. I'm really happy we're all here. But it probably isn't the best idea to get someone to reshelve books when they haven't been taught how to categorize them properly. It's like I spend most of the day following one of my coworkers around and discreetly fixing what he works on. He's a great guy, very personable, but wow is it frustrating.

Agreed to serve as local counsel for another attorney in my firm (different office). Answered complaint and then the case fell off the rails. Turns out firm has a conflict of interest that was missed in initial check, client has been instructed to retain a new attorney, court has ordered us to withdraw and client to produce documents by Wednesday. I keep reaching out to the attorney who I am assisting to ask if I can file my withdrawal and for the name of the new attorney and nothing. (Cont.)

Nothing is offensive by any means.

What should I expect from my manager? I've stuck it out for a year now and all I'm ever told is to not make mistakes. Manager stated explicitly that he does not want to review or test my work. Any attempts at discussion of why I made a mistake are dismissed by him as me making excuses. I never get any positive feedback. I somehow manager to make it a few months without making any errors but I missed a small detail in a large project and my 1on1 went terribly because of it. Is this common?
