As a junior (very junior) did you do things like read updates on your practice area (either that the firm circulates or your own research)? I feel like it’s probably a good idea, but generally just do my assignments and don’t feel like I have much time to do so, or understand the area fully enough to understand what’s being updated.

Nope.

I just read WSJ.

This really depends upon your practice area. If you want to grow business and excel in the future (and I get that all do not desire this) than you really have to be up to speed in your practice area so you can be conversant with clients and potential clients. Keeping up with changes in your area of law allows you to add value that you likely could not add if you just hit the files on your desk every day.

Do you have an easily digestible resource you’d recommend for keeping apprised of developments in m&a and securities?

like

Not sure your practice area. But in tax it’s super easy to get updates/newsletters emailed daily. What I (and most colleagues) do is skim the headlines and read through anything interesting/on point while having coffee (10-15 minutes a day). Obviously if there are new law/reg/cases then that just takes longer.

like

I literally just read things that interest me bc they pertain to what I do in the wsj or ft, or that my firm circulates. If there’s something important enough that it will impact my day to day work I will be told about it, probably 15 different times

💯 . I work in a niche area, trust and probate lit. Its always nice to be able to have a client meeting and remember a case update you read that is on point or similar. Also, it is statute intensive area of law so the court’s interpretation of it is vital to our area. I read them in bed in morning while I hit snooze or during lunch at my desk or while I am winding down for bed. I also keep a folder of cles or articles for a quick reference.

Yes. Honestly it takes no longer than the river minute walk to the subway. I use it as a way to get work. See something I think a partner would be interested in? Send it out to them with a summary of the thing. So far, this year, that resulted in about 150 hours of work for large an hour of effort.

Yes— sign up for automatic alerts and newsletters. Your firm librarians should be able to help you subscribe to relevant publications Take 15 minutes to have coffee and read them. This is how I started most mornings since being a first year.

Because I actually love what I do, yes. I am super invested in my practice area.

I have some updates emailed to me but hardly ever (read: never) read them

I’m currently a third year litigation associate in BL that will not hit the bonus this year due to a slow first half. Most of my hours are coming from two larger matters, and its been difficult to get staffed on new cases when those are slow. I’m contemplating a lateral move bc I am stuck/typecast on one or two matters and want to pursue a broader practice, and am not getting enough hours for good reviews/bonus/job security. Struggling with decision because I like my current firm. Any thoughts?

How would you ask to transfer to another office within your firm?

I lateraled from one firm in city A to another firm city B. During the interview process, I made a big deal about how I badly I wanted to be in B, despite only being barred in A. They hired me, paid for my bar courses, the works.

Now I find myself in a position where I need to leave B due to personal issues. Thinking of going to DCso I can just waive in.

It's been less than a year since I've joined; is it too soon to ask this?

I got an offer from firm 1 before the memorial holiday and have been stalling because I am waiting for an offer from firm 2..
I was working with a partner from firm 2 who got me an interview with the managing partner.. I got a verbal offer last week.. the staff told me they are processing the paperwork.
Should I still wait for firm 2? I feel like I can’t stall anymore.. I feel like I really should give firm 1 a response this week 😮‍💨 but I don’t want to lose both offers
