As a lawyer, what’s your perception of real estate as a practice area? Just curious. Sometimes I think my lay friends think I sell condos and time shares.

Fellow real estate lawyer here. Nearly everyone who’s ever asked me about my work walks away knowing that I work in commercial real estate and “help” people buy and sell large “corporate” properties. There’s a way to describe what you do without sounding arrogant or like residential real estate is beneath you. Saying you help business owners find space, you’re in development, etc. is a great way to help people understand that you’re not a residential real estate salesperson.

Agreed. I say real estate finance

OP: I laughed hard at your ending. Thank you!

I'm not a real estate lawyer. I think real estate lawyers help ppl buy and sell condos. Sorry lol

Is it better to

a) wash sale - sell for the losses and offset other cap gains (I'm taxed at 23% currently) and buy back in to Jasmy at lower cost basis OR b) just hold ?

Is life insurance a priority to anyone at the moment, and if so why is life insurance important to you?

It can be impossible to deal with financial losses due to declining health or unforeseen circumstances by not having life insurance. In these cases, the solution to your debts (that can affect the financial stability of you or your loved ones) may fall within the category of life insurance.

Want to get the perspective of younger attorneys. We’re a 4-attorney firm (2 partners, one associate, one OC) looking to add a 5th attorney. I left a mid-sized litigation firm on the East Coast where I was a partner to open my own firm. Decision was driven by quality of life. We are a civil lit firm. We don’t have billing requirements per se. We have expectations, but we’re reasonable - big on flexibility & quality of life. What are young associates looking for when evaluating job opportunities?
