As a Senior, what level of staffing issues do you think is the line between being a baby or there may be a staffing shortage

Anything over 40, ever. I value my time more than compensation dollars. If expectation is for me to work 2500 hours per year for 80,000, then tell me that up front when I apply and don’t say great work life balance. I would rather work 40 hours and get paid proportional to the “reduced” 40 hours. Just hire more staff.

This is just what I see wrong with the model. We tell our people to do 20% more work for 5-10% more pay. Our model chooses burnout over an appropriate staffing model with more headcount. I think this choice has been made because it’s a partnership model, not because it’s big 4. If you have fewer people asking for career progression, you have fewer people making it to partner which reduces the number of owners of the firm. I think in an ideal world, engagements could be staffed appropriately throughout the year and people could be rewarded appropriately for their contributions. Yes I know what big 4 is today, but I don’t think it needs to be that way.

Working over 55 hours/ week for longer than a 3 month period.

like

I’m surprised most people are responding 55hrs. Since my first busy season we have a required minimum of 60hrs for staff and 65 for seniors Jan-March. Last tax season I averaged 70hr weeks 😡. Come raise time they told me I was at market 🤣 I legit laughed at them and said yes market for a 55hr week.

Typically will do 12-14hr days Mon-Thur and then balance out the rest. Then they wonder why so many people quit from our office. #CR_Robots🤖

Depends what time of the year.

Busy season staff shortage would be 55+ for a month imo, non-busy season 45+ for a month

What office?

The practice group you're in determines what's "normal"/expected. If you're Core then yeah I expect you're probably turning 60-70 for 3 or 4 weeks with a stiff drop off. IT Audit is more of a sustained 55-60 for 6-8 weeks in peak season if you're under staffed.. in my experience

Sounds like you're short staffed then....I'm IT Audit

I've been working late most nights this week. In the office all week despite the WFH policy. Partner has seen me all day. I'm heading out at 5pm to pick my kid up from daycare since my husband has been doing it for me all week. And the partner says we need to catch up before the weekend. Dude. I told you I had to leave at 5pm today. I had another $75 added to my daycare bill this month for being late at pick ups. Don't look annoyed that you didn't come talk to me. I can call you from the car.

Flew for the first time today. Woman next to me took her mask off immediately upon sitting down and starting chatting loudly with her son. I asked her politely if she could keep her mask on and she proceeded to spend the rest of the flight fake sneezing and laughing giving me the side eye to see my reaction. What an inspirational mother.
