Wait, a mom doesn’t already know what the name will be?!
Is this true for all moms? Like, you guys actually pick names?!
Ohhhhhhh, my wife has some explaining to do!!!

We couldn’t use my first choice boy name because my nerdy, bookworm, computer-obsessed, video game playing husband had, “beaten a kid up in second grade with that name”??!! I had never heard this before... you were in a fight... ever?... 6 year old you beat up another 6 year old??? ... and THAT’S why we can’t use this name I love?? 🤣😳 I
literally said, I’m the one that should be saying no because of students!! We did not use the name, but I still love the name...
I had the same issue. I used a map and named my girls after towns in the United States: Cheyenne, Sheridan, Grayson.

Kinda dorky, but I named my daughter after a fictional character who I thought was strong, intelligent, determined, and kind since those are all qualities I want her to have.

Kaylie. After Kaylie Cruz from "Make it or Break It" I also considered Payson, but Kaylie is closer to my name. It was my favorite show for a long time.
Name them after a family member that you love.

Yes exactly

Since our 2 sons would have my husband’s last name, we specifically looked at Celtic first names to honor my family heritage. This truly narrowed it down, & at the time we were able to find 2 that I hadn’t taught, although I have taught them in the years since. Each son then had one of our father’s first names as a middle name. My father, who has no sons, was speechless & nearly in tears when I told him our second son would have his first name as his middle name.
Note from my story, no matter the name you pick, if you teach long enough you will have a student with that name, unless it is really unique, but at that point it honestly won’t matter. I’ve started parent teacher conferences with, “We must have something in common, we both have sons named X.” 🙂 And I’ve won over kids whose reputations have proceed them, “You have one of my two favorite names!”
I changed my boy name from Joseph to Jonas
How old was he?
I didn’t start teaching until after my children were born. (I was a substitute teacher.)
My names were prepicked: family names and interesting names mixed. You can pick a name then see the child and want to change it.
Get a baby book. Pick 20 names. Put it in a spinning wheel app and take the last name that’s left. Afterwards, you will find it silly and know the name you want.
Yes, you will find yourself disappointed when a certain name is taken off and will be fighting with yourself to put it back on... That's when you know for sure!!
Since I have taught 15 years before I had her, I made up a name for my daughter. I liked Evi, but did not want Evelyn. So I named her Eviny.
Same here. So with our family we looked at people who have passed away in our family first names and middle names and then what we did was taken initial of somebody and look for a name. In our faith we name people after family members who have passed away. So I actually used an R for Aunt Rita and named my daughter Rachel and she got my grandmother's middle name Naomi
It just really helps to narrow it down for you

We went with a family name and that made it easier.

A friend who was a sped teacher named her kid a certain name because she had never had a sped kid with that name. Before her kid was six months old, yup, she had a sped kid with the same name — and he was a doozy! 🤣
My cousin named after a student, my peer, that he thought was so charming. She knew how to play the adults. She was the opposite of charming. Every time I say his daughter’s name, I think of that girl. Don’t name your child after a student
I don't think that choosing a name that wasn't one of a previous student was ever part of what we considered. I'm sure we nixed names that had a negative connotation for whatever reason but I have had many students with my three daughters' names - both before and after they were born.
I was named after my mom’s student. It doesn’t bother me to name my kids after students, if o love the name.
We did all family names - first name from my family, middle from his (his are foreign and our last name is also difficult and I wanted teachers and resume readers to have a chance at saying part of the name correctly) Julia Clair & Elizabeth Manoela
You can look for the answer in a few different directions. I named both of my children names that I thought were unique at the time. My daughter Courtney and my son Micah. But it turns out that they were only unique in my little world. As later they both became names for females and males. In schools, we come across every name ever written in books, and many that parents make up or due to lack of education, misspell the desired name and it in itself becomes unique. And even if you came up with one that you created, many will like it it and chose it. So go with names that bring incite a beautiful feeling in your heart, no matter who else may use it. If you have “ancestry.com., you can go back may generations and be surprised at the names you have never heard of. Also, many different cultures and languages have unusual names. Remember, that if you love a name and know of someone with that name that you adore and their name is associated with deep emotions within you, there are always people with that same name who are very bad people and vice versa. So go with your own emotional attachment to the name. And when children grow up, some hate their name, and others cherish it. You just never know.
