Today was my first day at my new job (small startup doing data science). But after I had accepted my offer, I had been interviewing with Amazon, not really thinking it’d work out anyway. Didn’t make it past technical screen which is why I’m at this company now. But my recruiter said they’d recycle my resume for other potential roles, and today they emailed me saying they saw my job change on LinkedIn, asked if I’m still considering roles at Amazon. IDK WHAT TO DO 😭
Just message them, tell them you'd love to learn from their experience, and invite them to lunch next week. I've NEVER turned down lunch and love talking and mentoring. I have to assume most people in a leadership position will be the same way.
Agreed but another thing to consider is bringing the senior person a value proposition…if there were 10 mentee candidates all vying for mentorship, what do you bring? Perspective? A fresh approach? Information only you can provide? Attitude? Even the attitude that the Exec has a lot to do and this isn’t pure altruism for them may make you stand out. There’s a lot written on this topic of how to be a good candidate for mentorship.
Remember that you also have a valuable perspective that executives can learn from. This is often referred to as "reverse mentoring", in which younger employees can mentor executives on topics of strategic and cultural relevance. Reach out to request to chat (or have a mutual connection make a warm intro, if possible) and position it as an opportunity to exchange ideas.

The lunch idea is good. You could also just ask for a 1-1 meeting with them. Explain what you said here, that you are looking for a chance for mentorship, etc. I think you will find many of the receptive to the idea.
