Not too late. Never too late. A lot of larger strategy opportunities are requiring skills you’ve developed in AM. Find a shop that’s doing more project engagements to build quick experience. See where that takes you.
I have poached a few times from other groups like AM and have been able to prove out the larger return for their contributions in my group + greater satisfaction and retention.
Also, learn from this experience. If a company refuses to let you switch, then you have value and leverage. Find a way to use it to your advantage.
I was in a similar situation years ago. For 3 years I asked my company that I wanted to be in strategy. I worked both as an account person AND as a strategist helping out the department wherever I could. One day (3 years later) when I was getting promoted to senior account manager... they offered me a junior strategist role. Yes, I started over, but it was so worth it. I will never regret it. Don’t give up!!! It will happen and never take no for an answer.
Agree with what’s been said. You should definitely ask for the opportunity at your new company and see what they say. Help the strategy team as much as possible so they can see your value. And if they don’t let you switch, keep moving until someone allows you too.
Sometimes smaller agencies can also be easier as well.
