As an AE, how would you deal with an AM who is solely looking out for their own success, hoards projects, and does the bare minimum? Hard to make headway with them constantly blocking you from helping

Been there, it’s tough. I’ve primarily worked at smaller shops where I work on multiple clients, but my recommendation would be to first make sure that you’re raising your hand at every opportunity to help and also taking initiative with work that can be done before they get to it (and, most importantly, making sure the important people are noticing that you’re doing that). After that, what helped me is having an honest conversation with them about wanting to take on more projects because you have the bandwidth to and want to take some stuff off their plate. Beyond that you could go to their boss and express your concerns?

You don’t have to get a new job every time you face a professional obstacle! Have the conversation with your AM how you can help more. Then if that doesn’t pan out, go to your AD and ask for ways to help- the AD won’t be as territorial and should welcome the initiative.

Agree with the comments below. Also, what worked for me was to review their work/materials even after they have hoarded the task to themselves and recommend some options that you would have done differently. Even if it's after the fact. Show your understanding of the brand and the work, build the trust and, if that doesn't work with the AM, escalate it to their boss. Build the team's trust, as a whole, and express your growth concerns given the current team dynamic.

I’ve had a similar situation at BBDO. I constantly rose my hand and asked to take things off their plate to no avail. I spoke with the SVP AD on the account about it (that was the next role above that person) and still nothing changed. I felt I had no choice but to leave.

Throughout my career, I have worked at both “traditional” and “digital” shops. My current agency would fall under traditional but also offers digital services. Our process, roles and skillsets seem way outdated but I wasn’t sure if it was just my opinion or if this is just how it works. For example, we have no CTO or tech leads. Our digital producers feel more like project managers than actual producers. Account Management is just traditional, no real digital knowledge. Feels layered and dated.
