LOL, i'm going in the opposite direction right now. I've been freelancing on the production side for six years and i'm interviewing with local agencies for producer roles now.
I think the way you did it is smarter. Its easier to prove a producer background when you can point to a long term employer on your linkedin instead of a bunch of random projects from freelancing.
I don't think you will need to go all the way down to reception, but look for newer production companies and apply for their producer listings, you'll be a competitive candidate since you have an agency background.
If I was you i'd google "production companies [your city]" and just start setting up coffee meetings with producers or directors from those companies. They will tell you they may not have any work for you but they'll give you a few more names you should reach out to. Keep meeting people and turning over stones until you find a job.
There are a lot of freelance producers but if I was you I wouldn't try to do that just yet because the skillset is very different. Also stepping down to production assistant will make it hard for people to take you seriously as a producer in the future. The ideal transition from agency producer to production producer is definitely with an in-house production company.
Feel free to ask me any information you want about line producing and how it differs from agency production.
I'm in the final round of interviews with an ad agency in my town right now and I think i'm about to get an offer :D
I've applied to Bidding Producer roles but have been told I don't have enough experience. Is my only option to start at reception? I have 4 years of agency producing under my belt.
