As an in-house lawyer, I can tell you that 95% of client deadlines can be moved. Most of them are picked out of thin air by the GC/head of legal. Do with this info what you will.

“The deadlines are more what you’d call guidelines than actual rules.” Captain Barbossa.

like

This is why you don’t acquiesce to a request for parley.

like

Many (most?) GCs and HOLs who got in the in-house game did so because they preferred that life.

Outside of litigations, critical transactions, and some rare emergencies, most other deadlines are illusory.

I suspect many folks are hesitant to ask. You shouldn’t be. Setting a deadline is a partnership. If I propose a Wednesday and Wednesday doesn’t work for you because you have an upcoming brief/vacation/trial, you can mention that and ask me. I’m never going to get mad because you have other work, bc of course you do. And if it’s critical, I’ll tell you that.

All that said, don’t let us hang up the phone/zoom/whatever without getting a rough timeline for every project.

like

Definitely let me know when you are! I’m awesome 😊

likefunny

(Oh and if you need evidence, consider how 95% of deadlines actually do move).

like

I pray that I learn that some partner made an associate miss a meaningful life event to meet a deadline that I literally picked out of the ether. If you’re too scared to ask if the deadline can move then how do you have the courage to fight for a position you might not like?

like

Probably because one has nothing to do with the other and partners just don’t really care that much about associates in many cases.

I’m looking to get more work for my company. Wondering if any reps here would like to chat? Thanks!

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

Background check question. Had a grad school project on my resume with a company. Project was 8 months work with company and 3 months of prep training. This was considered a volunteer role and I have no W2s or anything associated.

On my BGC I listed the 11 months listed above. My previous resume listed this under my education, so I never had exact dates. Grad school was several years back.

Q1 is this kosher to list 11 months?
Q2 anything I should do to clarify?
Q3 does MBB care about vol?

I’m new to this startup and was leading a cross functional project involving several other product teams with dependencies. When we got near the end with E2E testing, I realized that none of the product teams really do QA: no test scripts, not logs of dev unit testing, no documentation of testing cycles – there devs asked “what do we do about edge cases?” I raised this to my boss (since I don’t manage those other teams) and he said I’m creating unnecessary stress for the teams. Is he right?
