As Christmas approaches I’ve been racking my brain trying to decide what to get my boss. Over the past year we’ve both gone through extremely difficult but similar personal challenges, and we’ve often been each other’s confidant. Our relationship has gone from strictly partner/associate to something more like mentor/mentee and even friends. What the heck kind of gift do you get to say thanks for being such a great boss that I literally might not be here if not for you?

This was hotly debated a few weeks ago, but the majority agrees don’t get your boss anything. Maybe send him a holiday card with a heartfelt note expressing your gratitude.

Agree with the personal thank you letter. I've been fortunate enough to get a couple of them over the years and I treasure them.

You should buy for down the chain. Not for up the chain. That’s how I have always been told the process works. I make sure to formally acknowledge said gifts from up the chain. I try to celebrate my superiors bdays with their favorite cake and a quick break with all the lawyers and staff in the area. (Large office/firm).

I always tried to find something clever but inexpensive. One year I got my female supervisor a Wonder Woman coffee mug.

I’ll second that. I did inexpensive Avengers cuff links and my boss was beyond thrilled.

Just read A1s link to the other thread (thanks) and it’s crazy! I’ve always worked in-house so much experience is totally different... my bosses always gift me and I back. Usually it’s something witty or an inside joke. Don’t spend a ton and just get something funny between the two of you. Inside joke gifts are always sentimental and appreciated it even if the item itself is kinda useless.

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables. I am seriously dreading talking to my new boss and telling my friend that I want to go back in-house. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I just feel so bad and don’t want to burn bridges

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.

Question for moms. I’m getting married next year and have several close family members that will have babies ages 8-11 months old by then. What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.
