Consulting

As consultants, does the fact that Pete Buttigieg worked at McKinsey make you less likely or more likely to vote for him? (All else equal and assuming you vote)

works at

Looking at him on the stage he looks like someone that came out of Democrats central casting who was hand picked for a role. Veteran ✅, alternative lifestyle ✅, Washington outsider ✅, good presentation skills ✅, little to zero experience ✅, able to be manipulated by party masters ✅, leftist tendencies ✅

This doesn't seem to be based in reality.

The idea that he might bring a slide to State of Union, earnings call style, is something I honestly look forward to.

Definitely less. The only thing I like about Buttigieg is that he’s young. He’s a distant third for me

Meh.. he did not work for Deloitte. He is not a superior to Harvard material. Fun fact: Dubya was Harvard MBA ;).

Slightly more. But it isn’t enough to overcome bad policies

More. But not specifically due to McK...it helps me feel like he has a trained logical way of thinking and is comfortable around smart people.

Neither. Like any such institution, McKinsey has some great ideas and some terrible ones (its stance on internet valuations before the dot com bust? Jeffrey Skilling’s thoughts on organizational motivation?). Some of my most impressive friends have come from McKinsey. I have also have spoken to a McKinsey consultant who was inarticulate to the point of it being distracting and heard more than one alum dismiss their previous work as little more than drawing shapes on slides and making it seem profound. Some of Buttigieg’s domestic policies are promising but his foreign policy in many cases is based on fundamental misunderstandings of the situations and an inability to do a very basic cost benefit analysis. At the end of the day, he is a fairly standard politician. While I definitely prefer him to Trump, despite me being quite conservative, I am not particularly inspired by him. What we need as a country is not the House of Quality but fundamental character, an ability to prioritize, and common sense. Our biggest problems as a country are very basic, primarily our debt and misuse of our power globally. I am jumping party lines this year and supporting Tulsi Gabbard even if I have to write her in.

I think he's a smart guy but would like someone with more experience than being mayor of a town of 100k to be in charge of the most complex organization in the western world

Initially I thought it was neutral - just trivia not really a salient characteristic. As the NYT tempest wore on it started looking like a modest liability. But ultimately I think the coverage has made me engage more with his candidacy, and I’ve been more impressed than I expected. Not sure if it’s because of that or his performance in the first couple of primaries, but I’ve started taking him more seriously. If you asked me 2-3 weeks ago, I’d have said I was pulling hard for Bloomberg, and the other moderates were all just too weak. Today I think Pete’s pulled ahead.

Does a coach would know if some one is getting laid off? They would have provided feedback during discussions as scatterplot ia just ONE parameter along with utilization and other things. Or they have a cutoff as to anyone below this utilization; in this scatterplot zone; in a particular OP - they get an invite. I guess just trying to understand what goes on behind making these decisions
