From my experience is that Freelance is actually a good position to be in during a recession. In 2008, the work still needs to be done, so FT people are let go and freelancers become a preferred method of getting the high-quality creative work done. I was busier than ever as a trusted freelancer in 2008. That being said, this is a different beast. The opportunity hidden in this moment is for you to control and tune how people perceive you once work starts flowing again.
Dig in on your portfolio - make it amazing. Figure out a way to showcase storytelling vs. just throwing up videos and jpgs. Show thinking. The closer you are to the "idea" part of the work, the more you can make. Are you being clear on what you actually do? it's amazing to me to how great creative people are actually do a lackluster job of telling their own story. Might as well work on that.
Also, once work start flowing again, you may need to pick up more tactical/boring work than you would normally do. Help agencies serve their clients. Help clients serve their customers. Absolutely do this for a season to survive, but make sure you position yourself for what you really want to be doing long-term. The deck has been shuffled so it's possible the type of work you really want to do will be within reach.
Time is money, so turn this time into future money.
Ahhh, the age old conundrum for the creative person: self-promotion.
