UPDATE: I contacted legal, and got all the the green signal that the vendor was out of line. Sent a strong email to vendor with legal clause and ofcourse, legal and whole world in cc. Response: Silence! I am not new to this male dominated passive aggression, but when I face such attitude everyday at multiple interactions, my brain just stops working and for a moment I wonder if it's even worth it. But thats the moment, you amazing leaders put fuel in my brain, and am ready to fight again! Thank you! Truly appreciate everyone taking time to respond and show solidarity!

Yes. I have and it is maddening. I set up a meeting with legal to go through the agreement so I was sure-footed in the levers I could pull if needed. It gave me confidence to say, “I will approve the invoice when work is complete, per the agreement.” Pushback got a response along the lines of, “our legal team has advised me on the best course of action and I am in agreement with their recommendation in this case. I’ll approve upon completion.” No one wants to tangle with legal when they are in the wrong. That usually nips it because they know you are coming to the convo with attorneys at the ready. And if you are changing vendors, as you should, then you don’t have to go out of your way to preserve the relationship beyond completion of the project.

Totally agree with this suggestion and would offer that, if your org doesn’t include vendor engagement (for big projects) reviews and annual vendor reviews in their contracts and/or processes to provide feedback, discuss contract fidelity, etc., it’s a great tool. I’ve used it often to discuss the overall engagement (including contract fidelity, invoice reviews, and performance) prior to closure and payment as well as to let them know why I may be shopping for a new vendor - esp. if it’s an ongoing relationship. It’s very effective whether you are set to move vendors or whether you want to level set and give them another chance. I had a vendor that I just couldn’t stomach - TBH. The relationship manager and associate (both male) were so condescending and liked to chummy up to our GC... their work product was awful, but they were supposed to be my overflow resources. After 2 engagements with engagement reviews, I got to pick a new, better vendor for overflow.

Jokes on him because he’s toast when this is over.

Often in calls with my team (ofcourse big boys club), this vendor ignores my comment and often tries to be pally with the big boys who are technically junior to me but have been in organization for ages, and have white hair...I am definitely going to change the vendor post project completion, but till then have to continue pushing back. Have you ever encountered such situations? And any suggestions to tackle this passive aggressive male attack?

We’re a boutique with a amazing team culture and really very interesting projects, great learning opportunities (aka we don’t get hired to take over tasks no one wants to do, we get hired to make a difference) + above average comp. Relocation is not necessary, as long as you’re in CET time zone and live close to an airport. DM me for more information! Cheers
