If it makes you feel better, I'm happy to be anonymous, but it doesn't bother me that I'm trying to figure out how to address my responsibilities.
Come on, Roy!
Hey Roy, lookup the state's guidance on reporting earnings. For some states, you don't have to pay state or local taxes at all unless you live there. For others, you must cross a threshold in order to file. Have a great day, Roy!
Roy that’s a good question!
I had the same question as well, so I can tell you anecdotally what happened with me. So I have been working far majority in my home state for the year. I got one W-2 that should satisfy my state and federal I believe. I also worked like 2 weeks in another state (bc the cutoff is technically November I believe). Every state is different but I didn’t meet the hourly threshold for the other state. Therefore I don’t get a W-2 for it. Last year I had two w-2s though- home state and client state. They should come at the same time but call your HR just in case, they’ll know!
D1. Thank you greatly. Roy.
Hey Roy, turn I’m off your name and put your role or company instead to keep you anonymous :))
How many weeks you worked in other states & which state ?
I worked a couple of days a month onsite for a bunch of months in one other state. All told, maybe 12 days.
Every state has it’s law for W2 reporting, the state which you worked for 12 days might not be having a law to report for such a small duration. Your employers payroll processing teams should be following the guidelines .
Each state is different; some it is one day and others it’s five or 30.
My firm’s policy is that once you affirmatively know you will spend more than 30 days in a state that we setup an withholding payroll allocation for that state. They audit us based on travel reimbursement patterns and send warnings when we don’t comply.
I’ve had W-2s with six states before.
Roy, can I speak to you about BDO? I've been in conversation with them for a little while and it seems like am interesting opportunity. Do you have an email contact?
