As junior struggling to get a job, I see my classmates get jobs at Wieden and Droga while I can barely get anyone to speak to me and I know it’s bad but I can’t help but wonder where I went wrong.

Two of the best creatives I know went 6 months wo a job. They were top in their class, yet saw everyone else getting snapped up. So, they used it. They took that time and kept pushing their book, kept getting their work written up and just acted like school never ended. They ended up winning more awards that next round than they did in two years of school. Then Droga came knocking and all of a sudden every recruiter who had been waffling with them was begging them to come in. It’s like they had an epiphany. Now they work wherever they want, bc if you’re good at your job and work hard at it, it shows. Word gets around. Reliable, talented people are actually kinda hard to find. So keep pushing is my advice. This world doesn’t belong to the most “talented” person, to the one who had some sort of magic. It belongs to those who don’t quit. Esp when I was getting started, I knew I had to out work everyone else I knew. And the harder I worked, the better my ideas got. And that doesn’t stop when you get your first job. In fact, it’s just getting started. Your ad career is a marathon, and the longer and better you run it, the more allies you pick up along the way. I used to teach advertising at a school in NYC, feel free to DM me if you want to talk more about it. Happy to help :)

I was in your same position for 2 years and would watch lower classes graduate and the same cycle. The best advice I can give which eventually worked out for me; forget them. It’s not all you. Pick a city you want to concentrate your efforts to work in. If you can, move there. Reach out to the recruiters at agencies and creative directors who’s work you admire, asking for informational interviews. Also look on eventbrite and their social channels for events agencies host as well as portfolio screenings. Gain feedback that can help you grow. We’re creatives in a business world but that doesn’t change the fact that developing a consistent, cohesive body of work for your book takes patience and time. It would help to attend AdHouse or CE classes at SVA . Sometimes we won’t always start out at the best and later it is possible we get there as we peak at different points of our life. Take care of yourself and don’t let it discourage your goal and take a week off when you feel burnt out from the search.

It took me a long time to get my first writing gig, and my first jobs were very undesirable. In the long term I think my slow start was an advantage. When I finally got to places where the good creative opportunities were, I was very prepared to take advantage. Don’t give up! Keep being yourself and trying to come up with cool creative ideas (advertising or otherwise) for your book. It’s really hard, but try not to compare yourself to others. We’re all on different time tables. You just want to find that one CD out there — doesn’t matter the agency name — who you connect with and who is the right fit for where you’re at, who will mentor you and help you grow. It’s taking a little longer than you’d like but don’t lose heart. They’re out there. You’ll find them.

Focus on your own journey. As everyone said, focus on developing your talent and skill sit - your passion and grit will get you where you need to go. After ad school I had major imposter syndrome and didn’t apply to anything for a long time while many around me got amazing job offers. I started out at a pretty unknown agency but had amazing mentors who helped me grow. After that things just took off and I got amazing clients, interviews at the fancy shops, etc. Don’t focus on getting into Harvard - focus on getting into the school that will be the right fit for you at this stage of your journey. And chin up.

Don’t compare yourself to other people, you’ll just drive yourself crazy. Your journey is yours, no one else’s. It’s a better journey than most, but not better than all. You got this.

Currently relocating to Germany for my partner's job, so currently looking for a role. Found a mid-sized company with a perfect fit, along with the title of who it reports to, who I was then able to find on LinkedIn. I am planning on reaching out to a recruiter at the company, but would it be alright to reach out to the individual the role reports to as well?

Everyone has the right to choose, but you do not get to choose the consequences of that choice. You can choose to not get vaccinated but the consequences might be that you have to change jobs or vaccinated people choose not to be around you. If you choose to not vaccinate your child then the consequence might be that you have to homeschool them. Choices all have consequences - whether good or bad.
