As one who’s new to managing team members, I’m hesitant to give unsolicited advice or guidance because if the analyst on my team already knows what I’m saying, I feel like I’ll come across as talking down to them. But I also want to be proactive about helping instead of just waiting for them to ask me questions. Any good strategies for reconciling this?

Ask them questions about the topic you would give advice on (what’s your approach for X deliv?). Give them a chance to impress you, and in response, you can fill in their gaps with the advice you want (which is now solicited)

OP - consistent and thoughtful feedback given in a structured and constructive way is always welcomed (by anyone serious about progressing their careers). Share the positive and identify opportunities to improve. Be tactful, but direct and plain spoken. Don’t shy away. Most importantly, provide feedback at regular, periodic intervals. You can’t expect people to rise over a bar If you don’t show them exactly where that bar is. Essential part of the job and too often a part that’s ignored.

I try to preface the conversation with something like “don’t let me insult your intelligence” or “please stop me if you already know this.”

Works in a marriage too :)

Be genuinely interested in your managee’s goals and help explain to them that part of your role is to help them fulfil them. You then get viewed as an advocate and not just someone trying to be their boss.

Was actually hopping for Trump to win (because I am a registered republican) but so sad to see the unsportsmanlike conduct from him and his supporters. They should respect the process. Just heard Biden’s speech and although I am an anti-democrat, I liked the way he spoke.
