Wicked is the correct answer. Book of Mormon and Waitress are also solid. Hadestown is outstanding but it’s not really a “first” show in some ways. I’d put a plug in for Lehman Trilogy as well, but same caveat.
I'd suggest (in no particular order): Wicked, Moulin Rouge, Come From Away, Waitress, Book of Mormon, or Hamilton. Wicked, Moulin Rouge, and Hamilton are much larger spectacles than the others, if that's what you're going for. Come From Away and Waitress are smaller casts and heartwarming stories. Book of Mormon has a lot of the typical big musical elements, but leans heavier on the comedy.
Phantom and Chicago are classics, but they're both tired and feel dated by now. The Disney shows are fine, but they're extra cheesy and you'll be surrounded by screaming children and people who don't understand theatre etiquette and will talk/film/etc. throughout the show. There are other great shows that I would suggest for future trips, but probably wouldn't be the best for your first time. (I'm assuming from your original post that you're looking for a musical, so I've stuck to that.)

Aladdin s 👍
Agree, really good!
Hadestown all the way (down… way down under the ground)
Rising Star
Yeah, it was largely written over a decade ago. I mean, how dare theater be political, but this isn’t it. It’s just a stunning banger of a classic story.
Wicked!
Book of Mormon for laughs
Wicked for music
Lion King for choreography and costumes
Finding Neverland for a tear-jerker
Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress for a tear-jerker
Moulin Rouge for hopeless romance
Lion king 🦁
Six
Phantom for the old world classic broadway/musical feeling. Dear Evan Hansen was also fantastic and poignant. Also second Wicked and lion king!
I just went last week to Phantom, it’s still great
Rising Star
Company or Hadestown.
Agreed. Hadestown is too political in my opinion
The “classics” are Phantom, Wicked, Lion King, and Chicago. I’d also advocate for Moulin Rouge!, Book of Mormon (VERY raunchy but also very funny), and Hadestown. Skip Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress.
The Lehman Trilogy was amazing!! Would highly recommend and it’s only playing till early Jan
Rising Star
Do not see Chicago. It’s tired af and the theater is falling apart. Phantom is fine if you want to tick a box, but I’m warning you right now that the second half is boring as hell. Half the current casts of both of these are not great.
Lion King has a few moments that still stand out as iconic but overall the show is uneven and agreed there’s a lot of cheese and a lot of kids.
Little Shop of Horrors off Broadway - really funny musical production
Rising Star
They did ask for Broadway, but I’ll second this as a great rec
The Lehman Trilogy - an amazing immersive experience!!
Rising Star
Wicked!

Book of Mormon or Wicked, no question
Moulin Rouge is such good fun. Going the day after for the 4th time!
I just saw the new Mrs Doubtfire show and was skeptical at first given the movie is such a classic, but I have to say…it was AMAZING!!!
I read a terrible review yesterday - wife and daughter are seeing it next week so I won’t tell them.
The fact that Slave Play hasn’t been said yet means it’s the ONLY correct answer.
This is so fair lol but my subversive side says this is even more of a reason to recommend! IMHO it’s the only Broadway show that isn’t so cutesy cutesy wrapped up in a little, easily digestible bow, and actually says something.
