As the most junior person on-site, is it a mistake to always offer to pick up lunch for the team? Want to be a team player but not minimize my role! Thoughts?

I never expect that of my juniors, and I caution women against falling too quickly into the “housekeeping” role.

As a female manager, I always try to help junior female practitioners not to fall into the housekeeping tasks. We had a very intense period of time at the client and couldn't leave the team room for lunch. I made an Excel sheet (so consulting:) ) and assigned each day of the week to one person - all genders and titles, to order lunch. If you have behaved in a way that now the team expects you to pick up lunch, talk to the engagement manager to balance it.

I agree 100% with D1. If you set the trend this way (quoting ‘always’ from your question), this will just always be expected of you. Not required in my opinion. Once in a while - if you’re working with somebody and it just happens that they haven’t eaten all day and you have a really good equation with them, and you’ve noticed - you could offer this. But as a co-worker you are close enough with, that is perfectly fine. I’ve done that for a friend of mine in the past and he did that several times for me too. But that’s about it.

I feel this too. Esp when they don't directly assign the duty to me. But it's like can someone order lunch for the team? Everyone looks around and I always end up saying yes but mostly because I enjoy it but I feel like now they expect it

like

I order team lunches because I’m a foodie and it’s fun but I don’t offer to get things for people if they could do it themselves. Lots of good wisdom here!

Agreed with D1.

🙏 thanks! Appreciate the advice - true that I have the inclination to fall into the housekeeping role - will be mindful of that . Good to hear your perspectives

I offer when I know the team is strapped and I’m too junior to help out. On my first project that happened a lot in the early weeks. By the end of that same project, my PM was ordering dinners while I was pulling more weight for the client. As long as it’s clear that your taking on the role to be a team player, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I would ask and also be like, can you help me pick it up?

Just be aware of the overall impression. If you are also the one taking notes and scheduling things and doing that “housework” try to not be the person getting lunch.

I'd love advice. I'm newly pregnant and in a frustrating space with work. Not to mention, expensive birth control, periods, and eventually potentially having a child. 50/50 makes me feel like a friend and not that valued. Thoughts?
