As the UK forges ahead to fight climate change, and fight for racial justice and equity, isn’t this a stain on the UK’s commitments? I guess this is the Orwellian case of some animals are more equal than others.

Wait until you hear about the other things that happened in the 1960s

like

Cultural revolution in China, Naxalite movement in India, Stonewall Riots, Cuban Missile Crisis, Birmingham Campaign/ Birmingham Riots, Selma March, Berlin Wall was built… A lot of major changes that impacted the trajectory of societies around the globe took place in the 60’s. It was a time of great change, so looking at some of these things through the lens of a world 60-years later is not a productive activity.

Indeed it is embarrassing and the Queen’s consent law does seem a bit odd given she is meant to be constitutional. I personally am ok with laws taking into account that she is head of state. They can therefore be adjusted to be more mindful of the complex relationship between Parliament and the crown. However it should be totally transparent when someone raises a, potentially reasonable exception. Additionally, some of those stories are from a long time ago and it is not clear how much the Queen (or even the Royal family) personally waded in. Not saying it is not a problem. It is awful. But this is from the 1960s. I doubt many European or North American countries had good representation of PoC in the highest offices of state in that era. And whether they explicitly excluded or were just generally racist makes little difference to the victims of such racism. The climate change policy is an interesting story. Here it seems it was the Queen’s lawyers rather than her personally. The nuance here is that those ‘climate change policies’ were actually a bit extreme. They allow the compulsory purchase of any land which any energy company claim they need to, for example, lay pipes or other infrastructure through. So, a lawyer for the head of state blocking a law that would allow an energy company to buy the land around a head of state’s residence does not sound that weird. For example, do you think energy companies should be allowed to force the purchase of the White House lawn and then build a wind turbine their? For the avoidance of doubt, this would mean the President literally could not stop someone buying all the land surrounding the White House. The law really was that badly written. Adding a caveat is totally sensible (and I hope they added more such as for crucial bits of military infrastructure and that foreign owned energy companies are limited in their ability to buy land etc).

As an American — why do we care what those monarchs think? 🤮 I wasn’t remotely surprised to hear the royals bullied Meghan Markle for her background and race. The US is far from perfect, but we’re far better than those stodgy elitists.

I’m interviewing for in-house and firm roles and I’m not sure how to navigate the compensation issue. My first job out of law school was with a state regulatory agency so comp was slotted and basically limited to salary and PTO. What should I be looking for when I interview in-house? With a firm? I don’t want to leave compensation on the table and end up feeling undervalued later.
