As there are no HR roles my rural area, I'm in a role at a healthcare nonprofit that has some HR elements but is not true HR. I am being asked to consider a lead role in quality with even less HR duties. I have 3 yrs. true HR experience and hope to relocate back to the states from Canada in 2-5 years to an area that I know will have more HR opportunities. I'm afraid I won't be marketable if I take this new role. So far apps to fully remote roles have been unsuccessful. Thoughts are appreciated.

The quality role might lead to other things. Are you dead set on staying in HR? If so, I guess you better not take it. Are you sure there’s no HR jobs in your area? I live in a rural Canadian area (pop. 1700) and there at least 3 major employers that have HR roles. We had an HR consultant in town that marketed themselves to local small businesses through the chamber of commerce. Smaller businesses that couldn’t justify a full time HR person could hire them. Best of luck!

Thanks. I am very much in touch with the local HR community so I will get a heads up if anything comes up here. I've thought about consulting but know others who have done it locally and not been entirely successful...plus not confident I have enough experience under my belt to go out on my own. Lots of small businesses here still don't see HR's value.

Yeah, if you're determined to stay in HR maybe don't take this new role. You don't mention how much of a pay increase you would get, but if it's not significant or not taking it wouldn't really affect your quality of life, it's not a real loss. Hope you can get back to doing what you love soon.

Thanks. No pay increase so yes, big deterrent...

HR people are passionate and not being an HR anymore with hinder what you have built for yourself don’t give up that!

LinkedIn has an option to choose 100% remote roles as well as indeed check it out ☺️

Having done the opposite of this...started in healthcare operations mgmt and then to HR, I think there are laterals to consider. Quality in healthcare means compliance auditing and teaching/coaching. These are both very relatable to HR. As a lead, perhaps you will help in strategy planning, hiring, and reviewing of other staff. This is all relatable also. I learned so much about HR working in healthcare that when I did go to finally get my degree I chose HR mgmt. Now I am consulting with an ASO on many HR topics including quality and compliance. Not to mention, you may fall in love with it and not want to be full time HR.
