The only two black students in one of my classes (I teach 11th grade) asked if they would get bonus points for it. Nice try, but no. Then another one said maybe they should get three fifths as many points. I laughed and told them that they get to read about the Harlem Renaissance and I’d be featuring black authors during our daily book talks. I said, “you get to learn about authors who contributed to black culture! THAT’S your gift.”
I would just laugh it off and redirect. They’re middle schoolers, so they don’t yet have a grasp on what humor is appropriate. They also like to ruffle feathers and try to shock authority figures. Personally, my strategy is to let it go and definitely not let them see me get rattled. (I also thought the three fifths joke was pretty clever.)
You told them being able to learn about their culture was their "gift"? Are you that obtuse?
A piggy back ride around the school? Where do they get these ideas from. That's wildly inappropriate and disrespectful
probably TikTok.... :)
sounds entitled
Rising Star
Their parents need to be talked to because this type behavior is unacceptable. I would also talk to admin as well.
That's atrocious
Teachable moments, for sure. Time to start educating them on the true meaning of BHM.
Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder about your black students. We need BHM because we learn white history so much the rest of the year. I think you need to examine where this resentment is coming from. A look at poverty rates, incarceration, medical treatment, etc. will quickly show there’s nothing entitled about being black in America.
