Aside from your 1:1, how many total interactions do you have with your manager in a typical week? DMs, emails, meetings, shared documents, etc. Are you satisfied with the current level of interaction? Or wish it were higher or lower?

My manager is a VP, with 12 reports. Not counting 1:1, maybe 1 meeting per week if lucky. Not satisfied, definitely. I don’t think my manager is focused on my professional development at all (mine or the other 11) just want to make sure my product develops in a positive direction and no one is complaining. I wish it was different actually …

I manage internal tool*

1:1 with my product lead once every 2 weeks, 1:1 with head of product once a month.

Barely any dms to either. Used to me more high touch, but once they realized I was mostly fine on my own they stopped hovering. But I’m quite self driven about my work and career growth so I don’t mind, they’ve got their own products to worry about.

I’m on a long term contract working for a venture builder, already a second class citizen. They read my weekly reports on my work with the client and don’t really care as long as the client’s happy.

Do I wish I had more? Sure. But due to the company structure it’s unlikely anything will change, and I’ve come to terms with it. Just trying to learn as much as I can until I get 2-3 years of product experience so I can move on.

I have a lot of interaction with my manager and I like it.

In addition to the monthly 1:1…
We have an entire department Stand Up on Tuesday and Thursday mornings
Bi-weekly TB as a UX team
I can Slack him whenever, if it’s a “hot topic” we jump in a Huddle/Teams Meeting
He has access to my workload through Trello

If I need him, he is there and up to date on everything because of above. Otherwise he let’s me do my thing. Not a micromanager.

I think we talk way too much. Weekly 1:1 to talk about workloads, plus sporadic messages over the week

helpful

Mine is way too much. Daily pre-8am 30-min TB, weekly 1hr team TB plus a monthly 1hr team meeting with our director. Then I have a 1:1 every 2 weeks with my manager that is 1hr long, and a monthly “team event” that is usually 3-4 hrs long. There’s also a weekly, cross-department status review meeting that includes all directors and the VP.

Then there are bi-weekly meetings to review our progress and required mentorship meetings my manager leads. But they’re really not mentorship, it’s just another meeting where they read through a slide deck to a larger group. There’s also random 1hr long meetings that happen about every 2 weeks that I’m required to attend where someone from within the company talks about a topic and how that thing can benefit our team. In addition to all of that I have 3hrs of other meetings every week that I have to attend with my manager.

On top of that there are tons of DMs from management. It’s rare I have a day where management isn’t DMing me about something. I probably spend a minimum of 1 hour per day just responding to DMs from management. The amount of emails from management vary widely. Minimum is 2 per day and most of those are either sharing documents they need my input on or for me to complete. Some of the emails are in regards to issues or work efforts that then send me down a “high priority” for anywhere from a few days to a few months at the expense of all the other work efforts I already have. Everything is managed by spreadsheet so in any given week management needs me to update/maintain at least 10 spreadsheets on top of the numerous Confluence pages I manage for everyone else in the company to get info and updates.

I definitely wish the interaction was much lower. I’m sure there’s other touch points in there that I’m missing, but that’s what I could think of off the top of my head.

Outside of my 1:1, I have 1-2 interactions with my manager on a weekly basis. We operate in a relatively autonomous nature and if I needed more from my manager, I can and have asked.

I’m pretty high touch with my manager (VP) we have two weekly 1:1’s. We also frequently DM during the week, but we have a high level of collaboration required for our initiatives. It works for us.

I have one weekly 1:1 with the CEO & CTO. If I need something more, I can just ask.

For my direct reports, I have a weekly 1:1 with each of them and I encourage them to ping me if they need additional time. They can (and do) DM me anytime. Usually just depends on what that week brings - I require the once a week 1:1 and the rest is up to them. Seems to be working, I avoid micromanaging

3-4 slacks probably.

I think I’m more than satisfied, plus my manager is a great guy, very friendly.

I think 1x a week or 2x a month works and this depends on your team. More seasoned ppl may prefer less but are encouraged to connect anytime. For those who may need more guidance, 1x a week is fine. I would also suggest soliciting feedback from them regarding this, if this concerns you. It shows you’re sincere re: growth, and not just ticking the box.
I was a former PM and managed ppl.

I’ve just started at a new job, where my manager seems to be clueless. Things get approved by her, but then I get into trouble with HER manager. When this happens, my direct manager doesn’t step in, and I have to explain myself. This has forced me to constantly go above her to the next manager directly, which is frustrating and uncomfortable. Communicating with my direct manager hasn’t changed anything. For those who’ve been in a similar boat, any advice?

Hello all.

How is this as first-time PM offer at Series A? It’s for the company’s first PM hire.

Three options:
175k base and 0.112% equity
OR
180k base and 0.096%
OR
185k base and 0.079%

Want to try PM and I’m excited. Which would you take?

TC now is 190k base and some pre-ipo stocks as a BI Manager. Current company is expecting IPO in ~June (not vested any yet because I joined in October 2021). I want to take the middle offer but maybe I should go big and get more Series A equity? Thnx

PMs, what is your approach to career development and changing companies? What do you prioritise in early career?

Company/Product?
Compensation and WLB?

I’m a JPM (1.5 YOE in 2 companies), background in projects management (5y - 1 company) . Happy with my role (4 months) and on a path to PM in 1y. WLB and comp are ok.

Now recruiters are calling with PM + 20/50% comp increase which is great. But I’m worried changing role could be premature and hinder my long term PM path.
