Bit of advice from the top - stop working weekends now before it gets to be a self imposed habit that’s hard to break. Bust your ass Monday to Friday, but recover and get some downtime at the weekend. I have 3 kids and I’ll be buggered before I can travel all week AND work weekends. How to do it? Firstly self-discipline. Saying no to things - practice saying no - it feels good eventually. Secondly, be busy at the weekends. Don’t answer phones or mails, do something that takes your time away. Thirdly, get better at overall time management. Sometimes I’ll pull a weekend but then I’ll take that time back in the week - with an early finish or a late start. It’s about finding a balance that works. One thing I know is this: I have had too many people burn out - not because of what I asked them to do - but because of what they pushed themselves into doing because of u realistic expectations. And no one remembers them now. Don’t be one of them!
Doesn't help anyone if you burn out. Let your team members fail instead of carrying the team yourself
Agree with D2. If you don't put your foot down to take care of yourself, no one else will do it for you. If my manager tries to impose weekend work, I say I'm out of town or visiting family or somewhere there's no wifi. Weekends are my time, and you can have them when you pry them from my cold dead fingers.
I can do fast turnarounds but hard to avoid making mistakes. Then I "lose points" for making mistakes...
Communication is key. You have to set up a call with your performance manager and tell him/her about this.
So on top of the advice others provided, aim to complete your Monday prep by Friday. Work the timing backwards for review cycles and finalization with your team so that they are on board.
Shitty spot to be in... but unfortunately it’s part of the game. Some projects are worse than others though just try to get through this one and network with different people (that have better balance) for the next one
Good advice so far. What do people think about "losing points" for making mistakes given that quick turnarounds are an expectation?
"Losing points?" This is not a test, but a way for the manager (or whomever told you this) to intimidate you to do what they want. Have a conversation with this person and make sure you get exactly what they want in advance (and advance, I don't mean Friday afternoon). Set expectations for what you need and when you can have it delivered. I understand that there will be weekends that we will need to do some work, but it shouldn't be the norm.
