The only big 4 strat groups that consistently place in PE are us and S&... and to a lesser extent S&O. And exits to PE are still pretty rare for us. To break in you generally need MBB or CDD experience (shout out to LEK and OW).
P1 I’ll pray for us 🙏🏽
@kpmg1 everything is perceived as meh relative to IB. CDD is the least “meh” and most applicable for an investing role. But otherwise - networking your ass off is right
PE is one thing, VC is another. PE hard, VC nearly impossible
BCG1 Curious why is it so hard/nearly impossible? Consultants are good at picking things up quick, no? How hard can the excel modeling be?
New to the workforce here so bear with me :)
Thanks BCG1. Any idea on how to approach making that move to PE? What skill sets do they look for from consultants and what’s pay like?
Don't worry about pay, it's more than what you make now. PE in an investing role is really hard for consultants, especially big4, especially post MBA. But I got finaled at one so it's not impossible, just takes a buttload of networking and timing. You won't get an interview at one you've ever heard of so find some headhunters that may be able to help place you and know shops that are open to consultants. Even CDD experience is seen as kind of meh compared to banking experience, because they can just hire a consulting firm to kill themselves over the course of a week or 2 for 500K+ to get the one off answer. VC-wise, better route is to work for a startup now and continue showing a track record until you start your own company or make enough money to start your own fund and you will be more marketable.
Thanks KPMG1. That’s very helpful. Could you share more on your networking experience? And generally, what you focus on at KPMG?
